The small peak in the nearground is Tavurvur volcano. It sits right on the rim of the much larger Rabaul caldera, which is a large volcanic hole in the ground open to the ocean seen in most of this panorama.

Zoomed in version of the eruption of Mount Tavurvur, Rabaul Caldera, Indonesia 2 years ago. In this version, zoomed in from ones I saw previously, you can not only make out the shockwave from the blast and hear the shockwave pass, you can also see debris tossed upwards in the explosion.

Here is the final offering in my recent sequence of volcanoes observed from space, the Tavurvur cone within Rabaul Caldera, also taken by the Advanced Land Imager on the EO-1 satellite.
This volcano sits at the end of the Gazelle Peninsula at the far eastern end of Papua New Guinea (the island of New Britain). In the image you can see the erupting cone and several other volcanic cones that form this complex, as well as an inhabited area.
The plume contains some ash based on the color so this is a more explosive eruption than the one in Africa. It is being blown to the Northwest by the winds, which pushes it in the direction of other inhabited areas in the Caribbean.
These eruptions have been relatively minor, but as this is a large complex within an inhabited area, continual monitoring of this ongoing eruption is going to be necessary to protect both lives and property. In this case, the satellite imagery can supplement monitoring on the ground by tracking the ash plumes and monitoring deformation of the volcano without having to put people in a dangerous, hard to reach volcanic complex.
