Kubin Chronicles - Part 3 - Basket Weavers

In this video, my aunt is weaving baskets using coconut fronds. These handmade baskets are used to store and carry food, and also hold other day-to-day items. I tried testing my hands at it again, but alas, you can’t master generations of skill in an hour.

Jour 1 : Une ancêtre Les sculptures en bois des Inyai-Ewa et de leurs voisins, installés le long du Korewori (un affluent du bien connu fleuve Sépik) en Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée, comptent parmi les plus anciennes de Mélanésie que nous connaissons encore en quantité substantielle. Elles furent sculptées entre le XVIème et le XIXème siècle ; certaines datent donc de l’époque de la Renaissance en Europe ! Elles étaient conservées dans des abris rocheux pour être protégées des éléments. Les représentations plates et larges, à l’image de cette sculpture, ont été renseignées comme figurant deux soeurs primordiales ayant contribué à façonner le monde, ou encore comme les ancêtres et fondatrices de certains clans. Cette figure est conservée au Metropolitan Museum de New York. _____ Day 1: Female ancestor The wood carvings of the Inyai-Ewa and their neighbors along the Korewori (a tributary of the well-known Sepik River) in Papua New Guinea are among the oldest in Melanesia that we still know of in substantial quantity. They were carved between the 16th and 19th centuries, so some of them date back to the Renaissance period in Europe! They were kept in rock shelters to be protected from the elements. The flat, large representations, like this sculpture, have been documented as two primordial sisters who helped shape the world, or as the ancestors and founders of certain clans.     Papua New Guinea formed its National Olympic Committee in 1973 and participated in its first Olympics as a country at the 1979 Montreal Summer Olympics. They haven’t hosted any Olympic Games, but they’ve participated in 10 Summer Games and no Winter Games. The Olympic sports in which Papua New Guinea has competed are Athletics, Swimming, and Weightlifting.
