Minish wasn’t an idiot. They had felt it immediately when they had cracked a tooth during the last battle, and had fought hard to hide it from the others. They had spent a few days hoping desperately that it would heal on its own, but the pain was only getting worse as time went on. It was nearly impossible to eat soft foods or even drink, and Minish didn’t know how long they could keep on like this without collapsing.
There wasn’t a single good outcome they could think of. Either something worse happened to their tooth on its own, or…
They didn’t want to. They really didn’t want to ask for help.
Still, nobody had caught on. Nobody had pinned Minish down and forced their fingers into their mouth. Whatever treatment they received had to come from their request, but that didn’t make it any easier.
They waited one more day, hoping against hope that the magic would bring them to Minish’s own era. If this had to happen, they at least wanted Zelda to be there. They trusted her, they loved her, and they knew that she would do everything in her power to avoid hurting them.
Luck wasn’t on their side. They remained in Lorule, and the pain kept Minish awake all night long. Any appetite for breakfast was long gone, and they curled up in their bed and whimpered until they could bear to stand up.
One step at a time. They would find Ordon and tell him what was happening, because he was at the top of the very short list of their companions that Minish trusted. Then they just had to gather the courage to talk to Chief.
Minish shook their head and huffed to themself. They couldn’t believe they were doing this.
Another shock of pain seized their mouth, and they closed their eyes against it. They didn’t have any other choice.
Ordon and most of the others were still eating breakfast, and Minish sat beside him while making themself as small as possible.
“Morning, sleepyhead,” the ranchhand said easily. “You hungry?”
Minish grimaced and shook their head, even though they could feel the consequences of avoiding food for this long. They reached for Ordon’s arm and squeezed it, tight enough to convey their urgency.
“Do you need something?” Ordon asked, then glanced at Minish and added, “Or is something wrong?”
Minish looked around the table and found too many eyes that pretended they weren’t watching. They tugged on Ordon’s arm and pointed at the door.
“Not here, alright. Give me a minute.” Ordon finished the last of his food before letting Minish lead him to their (thankfully empty) room.
Before they could think to hesitate, Minish pointed to their mouth and made a small, nervous sound. Ordon frowned, but kept his hands to himself.
“Something is wrong with your mouth? Are you hurt?”
Minish nodded, shying away even though Ordon still hadn’t moved to grab them.
“Is it something I can help with, or can you let Chief take a look?”
Minish took a deep breath and pointed past Ordon, to the door.
“Okay. You’re sure about this? I know you have good reason to not let people near your mouth…”
Minish wanted to say no, they didn’t even want to think about a medic being near them like this. But this had to be their choice, as much as they didn’t want it to be, so they nodded and braced for whatever would happen next.
“I’ll go find Chief, then. Do you want me to stay with you while Chief looks at your mouth?”
Minish nodded again, terrified at the thought of being alone again.
“He’s not gonna hurt you, I know it,” Ordon promised gently. “Wait here, I’ll be right back.”
Minish collapsed on their bed as soon as Ordon was gone, curling up in a tight ball that didn’t stop their panicked shivering. They whined to themself, trapped in a spiral of their own pain and misery.
Too soon, Ordon returned with Chief in tow. Minish hissed reflexively at the medic’s soft greeting, and watched as Chief flinched but managed to compose himself. They couldn’t do that again. Unsteady hands were dangerous.
Minish convinced themself to sit up with Ordon’s help, and just as quickly retreated to protective arms. They heard Chief settle in front of them, and turned to face him when they were ready. Chief smiled, forced but there all the same, his hands visible and resting on his lap.
“Ordon told me your mouth hurts,” Chief said. “May I see?”
Minish made an uneasy sound and nodded, watching Chief closely. The medic reached for Minish’s face, and they leaned away before he could touch them.
“I need you to stay still,” Chief explained. “Please.”
Minish narrowed their eyes, but allowed Chief to carefully touch their cheek. He was wearing his gloves, and as Minish opened their mouth they tried to keep their focus on the unfamiliar texture of the rough fabric on their skin. Chief’s hand stayed well outside of Minish’s mouth as he looked within.
“Looks like you cracked a tooth,” Chief confirmed. “It doesn’t look good, how-”
Chief’s thumb shifted slightly, grazing the edge of Minish’s lip, and their mind went blank with panic. They twisted and bit, but their tooth couldn’t handle the pressure. They recoiled with a cry, hands pressed to their mouth as if they could hold back the pain.
“Shit- Chief! Are you-”
“I’m fine. Minish, I’m sorry. Are you okay?”
Minish couldn’t answer, keening miserably as their eyes stung with angry tears. Angry with Chief, angry with themself, angry at this whole situation. Chief had scared them, they had almost killed him for it, and their mouth still hurt so much.
“Let’s just give them a minute. You need to breathe too.”
“You’re right,” Chief sighed.
They sat quietly for a few minutes, then Minish slowly came out of hiding once more. Chief wasn’t upset; he never was. He asked Minish some questions like nothing had gone wrong.
“Do you know when you cracked your tooth?”
Minish made a face and held up their fingers. Three, four days ago?
“Have you been able to eat despite the pain?”
Not enough, not anymore. They shook their head firmly.
“Okay.” Chief sighed again, hiding his own face behind his hands for a moment. “I know you’re not going to like what I’m about to say.”
They didn’t like anything about this. They couldn’t see how Chief could make it worse.
“If your tooth hasn’t healed in the last few days, it’s not going to start now. You’re going to get sick, either from hunger or infection as it gets worse. It needs to be pulled. Do you agree?”
They hated it, but they did. They were more afraid of what it would do to them if they left it alone.
“If this was anything else, I would say that I could do this without giving you something to help you stay calm. But just from touching your face…”
Minish flinched, and Chief looked genuinely apologetic.
“If you’re awake, I don’t think that would be safe for any of us. You still have a choice, though. Would it be easier if I only gave you enough so you can’t feel your mouth, or would you rather sleep through it?”
Minish wanted to hiss and hide and never have to make this horrible choice, but that wouldn’t help. Should they stay awake while Chief pulled their tooth, or give themself the mercy of sleep?
Somehow, that question answered itself. Slowly, they held up two fingers and closed their eyes.
“You want to sleep?” Chief guessed, and Minish nodded before ducking to hide against Ordon. “Okay. Are you ready now, or do you need to wait…”
Minish made a sharp sound. If they waited, they were going to lose their nerve and continue to live with the pain until they were truly in danger. They needed this to happen now, they needed it to be over.
“I understand. Ordon, talk to them, please. And don’t stop.” Chief’s voice had taken on a different tone, one that sounded more urgent.
Ordon’s deeper voice immediately pulled Minish’s thoughts away from Chief. “Hey, Minish, you’re gonna be hungry when you wake up, right? How about I ask Hateno for some honey, and you can have that as soon as your mouth feels better. You can eat all your favorite fruits again, and-”
Minish felt a sting in their arm, and their terrified gasp never made it to a scream.

There was something soft and fluffy underneath Minish’s hand. It wasn’t their tail; they could feel it resting on their other side. They felt a weight over them, too- a heavy warmth draped over their legs. It brought a numbness, like it had been there for a while but as the moments passed Minish realized that their entire body felt like that. A weird sort of tired, that tugged at their limbs in a way that made it a struggle to move.
What… had happened?
They opened their eyes, blinking a few times and found themself tucked into bed in a vaguely familiar room. The furry mass on their lap turned out to be a great gray wolf, alert and docile with his head beneath Minish’s hand. It was Ordon, Minish knew, and they wondered why it had taken some effort to remember.
“You’re awake,” the wolf said, his eyes looking over Minish while his head remained still.
Minish flexed their fingers in the wolf’s fur and swallowed, about to respond but another sharp sense of wrong struck them as they did so. Their mouth felt normal, and they hadn’t thought anything of it but something told them that they should have felt pain. They ran their tongue over their teeth and discovered a gap that hadn’t been there before.
Everything was starting to line up, but Minish couldn’t quite catch up. They tried to speak again, in the picori language that came easier when Hylian was too much. “Doctor? Hurt me?”
“Not quite,” the wolf said. “You were hurt, and you asked Chief to help you.”
“I… asked?”
“Yes. You wanted to sleep while he treated you, so you’re waking up from that.” The wolf lifted his head, only to lick Minish’s hand. “You were very brave to do that.”
“Oh.” They tried to imagine how they could have possibly trusted Chief enough to agree to that, but their mind still felt very fuzzy from whatever medicine had put them to sleep. “…I’m hungry.”
“We thought you might be.” The wolf pointed his nose to the side table and explained, “I didn’t know how you would feel, so I brought you honey to start with.”
Honey sounded very good. They would have thanked Ordon for thinking of their favorite food (and one that wouldn’t hurt their mouth), but all of their energy was spent on reaching for the jar of honey. Their body was still clumsy and weak from their unnatural sleep, but they were able to grab the jar and open it. Ordon watched them, clearly guilty that he couldn’t help, and Minish scratched the wolf’s head until he settled again.
Being able to eat even something so simple and sweet felt almost too good to be true. It hadn’t come easily but extending their trust, however reluctant, had offered a nice reward.
Started talking to the creator or @thatbrokenpromise on discord and learned more about their story. I haven't quite gotten a chance to read what they've written but the Lore I've read and the pictures I've seen have made me excited for the story once I get the chance to read it.
Regardless I wanted to try my hand at drawing one of their heroes and decided to start off with Chief (Spirit Tracks Link).

Skyloft called them dark keese; Hateno didn’t think much of it as they fought off a small swarm of them. They went down easily, like any other keese, but Hateno was wrong to assume that their simple appearance meant that he was safe from elemental attacks. Skyloft’s shouted warning was a moment too late as one keese dove past Hateno’s shield to sink its fangs in his arm. Hateno hissed, flexing his hand to dismiss his shield and immediately drove his stone fist into the bat’s body. The force of the blow sent the keese flying, dead on impact, but a wet crack and a lingering pain in Hateno’s arm told him that something had been left behind. Another keese swooped at him and he sent the signal for his shield to reform.
Nothing happened.
Not a good time!
Hateno ducked beneath the screeching bat and shouted “I need cover!”
Smith was there, slicing the remaining keese down while Hateno smacked some sense into his prosthetic. The impact jarred his left arm unplesantly and he growled, reaching to pull out the dislodged fang. His right arm fumbled again, useless fingers pushing it deeper into his skin instead.
“Shit!”
“What’s wrong?” Smith asked, kicking the last keese off her sword.
“My arm’s not responding,” Hateno complained, and tapped his pad to remove it altogether.
“Let’s see if Chief can take a look at it,” Smith suggested, her hand offered to help Hateno stand.
Hateno took it but his legs were weak under him, sending him staggering against Smith. “Woah- what the…”
“What’s this?” Smith asked instead, pointing at the angry red lump on Hateno’s arm. “Looks like Chief has more important things to check?”
“Ah yeah, I got bit.”
“So did Prince. It didn’t look like… that.”
Hateno cringed. “Riiight…”
“What’s going on?” Chief asked. Hateno hadn’t noticed Smith wave him over… or maybe he just had a sixth sense for trouble. Was that a standard part of medical training? “Weren’t you just wearing your arm?”
“It’s glitching so I took it off,” Hateno waved it off and offered his other arm for inspection. “This one got bit by one of those keese, I think you’ll need to pull it out.”
Chief frowned and turned Hateno’s arm over. “Pull what out?”
“The… fang…” Hateno hissed as he saw what Chief was looking at. “I tried to grab it and only pushed it in further. I didn’t think it would heal over so fast.”
Chief pushed down on the raw lump of skin on Hateno’s arm, making him yelp as he found the buried fang. “Sorry. Let’s find a place to sit so I can dig that out.”
Smith winced and clapped Hateno on the shoulder. “Well, have fun with that.”
“Thanks,” Hateno groaned as Chief led him to a quieter corner. His steps were unsteady, more uncoordination than nerves, and Chief picked up on it immediately.
“The paralytic is still in your system,” Chief stated. “Prince recovered within minutes.”
“What?”
“Skyloft said that those dark keese target your ability to fight. Rabbit and a few of the others reognized the type.”
“That’s why my arm stopped responding?” Hateno asked, and Chief nodded.
“I don’t know if the effect is a venom or a curse, but it’s safe to assume it’ll get worse the longer the fang remains in you.”
“Yeah,” Hateno sighed. “Let me grab my poppy milk and-”
Chief grabbed Hateno’s hand before he could touch his pad. “No painkiller. I’m sorry, but again, I don’t know how the paralytic could react.”
Hateno swore. “So I just have to hold still and feel you cutting me open?”
Chief directed him to sit down and pulled two scapels from his bag, comparing their sizes. “I could ask Smith to hold you?”
“No thanks.”
“Keeping still shouldn’t be an issue until I get the fang out,” Chief pointed out wryly. “But yes, you will feel it. You can have your medicine as soon as your arm is closed again, alright?”
“Yeah,” Hateno breathed, and extended his arm for Chief to work on; he tried to, anyway. Just like the prosthetic, it no longer moved when he told it to. “…You’ll have to move my arm.”
Chief hummed acknowledgement and stretched Hateno’s arm out. He cleaned the area around the keese bite and Hateno narrowly avoided biting his tongue as Chief raised the scapel to his arm.
“Deep breaths. I’ll have it out soon.”
Hateno opened his mouth to retort that he was breathing but an involuntary scream left him instead as Chief made the first cut into his skin. It was hard to stop screaming after that. Chief didn’t allow him time to catch his breath as he sliced deeper through layers of muscle, searching for buried fang. Hateno couldn’t pull away, he couldn’t fight back, he couldn’t even wipe the tears from his own face. He was trapped, not by Chief’s loose grip on his arm, but by that fucking curse the keese had embedded in him.
Chief exchanged his scapel for tweezers and Hateno did bite his tongue this time as metal and bone scraped inside his skin. Chief quickly pulled the fang out, his own hand starting to shake as the curse reached him too. Hateno watched through blurry eyes as, without a moment’s hesitation, Chief threw the fang into the fire that someone had started. There were a few startled yelps but no signs of a magical explosion.
They both sat quietly for a minute, Chief breathing heavily and Hateno still shaking with sobs that refused to stop even though it was over. His eyes were squeezed shut against the tears, so he didn’t realize that Chief had moved closer until there was a hand on the back of his neck and soft lips pressed to his.
That was certainly a surprise, though Hateno wasted no time in desperately leaning into the kiss. He tasted salt and copper and felt a warm glow in his chest because Chief had kissed him first. He was always so shy about it, Hateno had assumed that Chief had forgotten that he could initiate.
Hateno was reminded fondly of their first time, when Chief had been bedridden with stitches down his back. What Hateno had told Chief then stood true now.
“They say that a kiss makes the pain go away.”
He didn’t want Chief to pull away, even though rationally he knew that his arm was still open and bleeding. He opened his eyes to shining sea-green, a bemused smile on lips he tried to chase.
“Ah- not yet,” Chief said, holding him back with a hand on his chest. “Let me close this up, first.”
Hateno groaned in disappointment, but he couldn’t deny his relief as Chief helped him down a vial of poppy milk. He sighed, feeling the pain dull even as Chief pulled a needle and thread through the wound.
He waited patiently, watching as Chief bandaged his arm and went through the long process of putting his tools away. His mind was fuzzy when Chief finally turned to look at him expectantly, but this time it was Hateno who pulled Chief closer for another kiss.

It was easy, natural for Link to let his mind drift away as Impa showed him to the medical tent. He stared straight ahead, letting the doctor’s words wash over and around him as he sat and offered his arm for examination. They asked questions and he gave silent consent, his slate untouched on his lap.
“I need to move your arm, there…”
Nod.
“Let me know if this is too painful.”
Nod.
A nurse was busy off to the side, but Link barely registered their movements. He tried not to focus on anything at all, not the doctor’s incessant confirmations of his consent-
“I am going to touch you here, is that alright?”
Not the feeling of hands on his skin, unwanted and unable to be pushed away-
“I think Lana would be more equipped to deal with this one.”
That name, Link couldn’t ignore. He suppressed his flinch and cast his mind out farther, hoping to escape the rest of the conversation and the anticipation of her hands on his body.
The nurse spoke quietly, soft words that Link wouldn’t hear. He didn’t react as the doctor left the tent. He was still, barely present, waiting for her to enter and do what she would with him.
Long, slow minutes passed and she didn’t appear. Link’s hands curled into fists, his nails digging into his palms. The sharp new pain brought him back just enough to realize that the nurse, at some point, had sat beside him. Not speaking, not touching, just waiting.
The nurse hadn’t asked any questions, so Link dared to ask his own. He took his slate and scrawled, messily, Lana.
“Hm? No. She doesn’t need to see you,” the nurse said. “You don’t need her magic to heal.”
Link wondered how he knew that. He wondered why, amidst the fear and uncertainty, he wanted to reach out and hold the nurse’s hand.
It was a ridiculous thought, but he watched his arm move as if with a mind of its own and his fingers brushed against the nurse’s.
He startled. Link flinched. Then he realized that the nurse hadn’t moved away. He reached out again, slipping into a waiting, callused hand.
The grounding sensation was instant. Link felt tethered, felt present, felt safe in a way he didn’t think was possible in a medical tent. He didn’t need to think about the doctor, or Lana, or floating away. He was here, and the nurse at his side understood what he needed more than anyone else had so far. A calm, steady presence that waited for him to make the first move.
“You can wait here until you’ve healed,” the nurse said. “Nobody else needs to see you right now.”
Link wanted to thank him, but words had never worked for him. Cautiously, he pulled the nurse closer and folded around him in a loose hug. The nurse was so much smaller than him and Link could feel that he was strong, as gentle as his arms were as they wrapped around his waist. They held the embrace for a few moments, then Link was the first to pull away before he offered his arm again. This time, his mind was clear as the nurse went about to accelerate the healing.
Art for Try It On, a @thatbrokenpromise AU fanfic of mine, in which Hateno (BOTK Link) concludes Chief (Spirit Tracks) would look great in the Ember set.
