Like please forgive and/or feel free to skip past this pity party, but the curse of truly striving to be understanding toward everyone is that they learn to take for granted that your thoughtfulness and patience is strong enough to hold their human imperfections. You are the rock-solid trust fall partner. You will never drop them, no matter how hard they fall, how little warning they give you, how tired your arms may be.

And the upshot is that the moment YOU dare to be human and imperfect, they experience it as a betrayal and treat you like the worst villain on earth for it. They take enormous offense to even a hint of frustration in your tone, despite tolerating much worse from other people they love and unquestioningly expecting you to tolerate much worse from them.

In my entire life I have found absolutely nowhere and almost nobody that is strong enough to hold me when I express pain or frustration or even just set a boundary. And while I understand intellectually that this is largely an other-people problem, it does become very hard not to wonder what is so fundamentally wrong with you that you are not lovable or even likable except when you are frictionless.
