i was poking around my local library today looking for folklore stuff and just wondering-- where should i start wrt reading holly black's stuff?
I’m gonna list them form oldest to newest, with the ones I’ve read, not including short stories she’s done, or the Magsiterium.
For the Modern Faerie Tale series Tithe is the first, Valiant and Ironside are the sequels, you can read either after Tithe as they run on the same timeline (following different characters) and meet at the end (from what I can remember). Kaye is the main character in Tithe, with Roiben as a hot faerie knight. I read Valiant and then Ironside, Valiant has different characters from Tithe, while Ironside follows Kaye. There are two queer characters that are main characters in this series (Luis and Corny).
The Curse Workers are another trilogy, that do not have faerie, but are about people who have the ability to put curses on people. It’s got a really interesting concept and world building, and a family structure akin to the mafia, and the main character, Cassel, is a moc. White Cat is the first book, and there’s mystery and murder. It’s good.
The Coldest Girl in Coldtown is a stand alone book about vampires, with the idea that they exist and are separated from humans, living in places called ‘coldtowns’. These places are filmed and broadcast on television, having the vampires very much like celebrities. The book follows Tana , who travels to one of the coldtowns to save her boyfriend and her sister. It has many allusions to the story of Hades and Persephone, with Tana and the yummy vampire Gavriel, which I loved. There is also a trans girl in the book!
The Darkest Part of the Forest is also a standalone, featuring faeries and knights and a sleeping faerie prince in a glass case. The main characters are siblings, Hazel and Ben, and the town they live in which happens to be situated near a forest that houses a wild court of fae. Hazel is bi (shes gets a bf tho) and Ben is also queer (he also gets a bf!).
And that takes us to The Cruel Prince, her newest book. Planned to be a trilogy, this book is set in faerie (as opposed to being set in the human world, like her previous faerie books), and follows three human sisters who get stolen away to faerie and grow up there. There is mischief, mayhem and deceit, as per usual for Holly Black. One of the sisters is bi and has a gf! The book also has some cameos of characters from the Modern Faerie tale series and tdpotf, so I would recommend reading them first if you have time, though it does not affect the major plot of this book.
