Traverse City Turn (three of three)

I was able to follow Great Lake Central’s TC Turn yesterday; I photographed it at three locales.

This third sequence was also made along the former Grand Rapids & Indiana (Pennsy), but now we’re up the line in Kingsley, Michigan. I researched where the GR&I depot existed, and it’s site is just to the right of where I was standing for this shot, on the other side of the tracks where there’s a little clearing. I’ll come back in the winter to see if I can find any trace of the structure, such as a foundation.

Traverse City Turn (two of three)

I was able to follow Great Lake Central’s TC Turn yesterday; I photographed it at three locales.

This second sequence was made along the former Grand Rapids & Indiana (Pennsy) where River Road and Keystone Road collide in a new roundabout south of Traverse City. They’ve collected the bulkhead and are now headed back up the GR&I branch along the Boardman River.

Traverse City Turn (one of three)

I was able to follow Great Lake Central’s TC Turn yesterday; I photographed it at three locales.

This first sequence was made along the former Pere Marquette on the west side of Boardman Lake in Traverse City itself. The crew had just worked Beacon Recycling to the south and are headed back to the depot where they left an empty bulkhead car from Williamsburg.

Branch Line Railroading

This is the Great Lakes Central Traverse City Turn headed back up the branch line toward Walton Junction and then Cadillac, Michigan. The line was formerly the Grand Rapids & Indiana, and later the Pennsylvania.

The first shot was taken off Keystone Road, while the last two were taken along River Road. The locomotive, currently listed as an SD40-2 after rebuilding, was built for the Santa Fe in 1966 as an EMD SD45.
