Whaaaaaa? I was in bed and groggy when I found out I was going to Thailand to teach with CIEE. I was in the middle of my morning routine of checking my email in bed before starting my day and BAM everything changed. The news that I’d been waiting for since I submitted my initial application to CIEE in late January was finally here. I stared at my phone for exactly 5 seconds before I began to comprehend what just happened. I even did the whole ‘maybe this is a mistake’ thing before it sunk in that I, Karima Shagufa Sharifi, a recent graduated of the History program at Cal State East Bay and lover of all things cat, was going to teach in Thailand.
Mind. Blown.
I immediately did what anyone would do, I texted my sisters and a few cousins telling them the news, went to work told all my co-workers the news and forgot to tell my parents.
