I hate to jump on my soap box, but I have a kid in my class this year who is as smart as a whip, but he's not potty trained (I'm talking just shy of five years old) and he's really mean to other kids and hits them/pinches them and then laughs about it.

So...I had to have the fall semester conference with his parents today and you know-I let them know that he's smart and picks up on things quickly, but the toileting and bullying is becoming a big issue. Keep in mind that his parents are both overweight, wearing Star Wars shirts, and look unhappy to be there . So they first tell me he's mentally delayed bc of hearing issues. I tell them that he was sight and hearing tested back in August and tested fine. So then they tell me he's delayed in his speech. Again, not true. They finally whittle down every excuse until they say, "Well he might need to be tested for autism".

I'm talking about parents who obviously don't follow a good diet at home, routinely tell me he's going to bed at 10 pm to 12 am, never responds to class emails or provides him with show and tell, never volunteers for field trips or class events...

And now instead of just owning up to their kid has behavior issues and trying to work with me on finding solution, they're going down the list of things wrong with him so it's ultimately out of their control to fix it.

Sorry for that rant, but I'm so tired of this trend of 'I can't possibly change my parenting or my child's life/routine just a little so there must be something wrong with them'.

Not to mention they secretly went and whined to admin so now he doesn't have to wear underwear. I have a kid wearing pull-ups in a kindergarten class.

i’m always really confused when students just..... don’t turn stuff in. i guess because that was just never me as a student and i was always doing every little assignment... but also because i make it clear to my classes that if they need an extension, for whatever reason - they don’t even have to tell me - i will give them one. so that means that the people who don’t turn stuff in just literally don’t care. and that’s confusing to me? because i care 200% about everything? someone explain this to me pls

One of my kids: Ms. [insert last name], my glue won't come out

Me: Oh no. Let me see if the cap is unscrewed all the way *struggles*

Kid: See? It's not being co-operal

So my kiddos have started classroom rotation today and rewards/consequences. Basically in the second half of the year, they're more independent and have to responsible for their time managment so we do "rotations" where they take their classroom "passports" and move around the class to play and do work. The rewards/consequences is we stop time outs and if they make poor choices they have to go pull a "consequence" from a small box (lose classroom job, computer time, ect) or if they go above and beyond they can pull a "reward" (first dibs on class jobs, extra computer time, ect).

My babies are growing up so fast ;_;

So working in my new planner-if I can finish two/three classes per month, I'll be done with the academic part of school and be ready to start demonstrative teaching in August. This might be my last class at NASA :O
