A little bit of concept art for the slow-going-but-still-in-progress illustrated storybook I’ve been working on!

Playing with a more painterly style for the character art, as well as a partial background with a broken border which I think would be cool for some pages!

The background on this one is just a placeholder for Reasons, but I’m pretty happy with how this turned out as a whole! Just imagine her standing across from the June I posted recently and you’ll get the picture.

This is a revisit of a piece I posted a few months ago, since I was struck by inspiration for this story yesterday! I’ve finally sketched out a real outline and I’m super excited to start writing it.

This is the first, like, “fully illustrated” piece I’ve done in a while - backgrounds and lighting are both strange, difficult beasts to me - but I’m really happy with how it turned out. I’m especially proud of the lighting on Margie’s face here!

If and when I actually do the storybook for team glasses, I think I can say with some confidence that I won’t be working in colored pencil, at least for the backgrounds. Colored pencil is by far my favorite color medium but it gets exhausting to fill a whole page like I did here.

Sometimes being an artist means rambling about characters having glasses at work and then not being able to shake it until you design a Disney-type princess who wears glasses for no purpose at all.

That being said, meet Princess Marguerite AKA Margie and her travelling companions: June Marlowe (human), Rusty (dog), and Bean (bat?). Bean is kind of a fantasy animal, but she’s bat-like. They go on a quest together!

I gave them two outfits, a fancy “princess” look and a quest look. I thought about doing June’s fancy dress in reversed colors (green with blue trims) because the green on her quest clothes is more dominant, but I liked them as visual opposites.
