Team Member Spotlight: Tosh Tanaka!
In this team member spotlight, I spoke to Tosh Tanaka, the Gail Project’s expert adviser on all things photography and media production, and an educator at UCSC!
J: Hi Tosh, thank you for talking to me despite coming back from Taiwan recently! I want to know more about why you joined the Gail Project.
T: I joined the Gail Project because it was a chance to continue working with Alan. I had worked with him on a previous project about what happened to one Japanese man at the close of World War II and his subsequent journey to the United States through Manchuria and Japan. I am a photographer by training and a very amateur historian interested in Japanese American World War II Incarceration, civil rights, and Japanese diaspora. I didn’t know much about Okinawa before Alan had approached me with the images. But I quickly became intrigued because of the quality of the Gail images; although he was an amateur, they offer a studied photographer’s perspective and show a mastery of the medium. In short I joined to help figure out more things about the images and tease out their many messages.
J: We’re so grateful to have your photography skills and photographer’s eye as part of the Gail Project :) That being said, what part of the project are you most involved in? What is challenging about your role? What is rewarding?
T: I’m most involved in the media production, re-photography and diaspora connection. I’m most challenged by my work schedule and writing about what we are doing. The exploration is of these topics with others whether in the library or in person is rewarding and fun.
J: It’s awesome that you are involved in such diverse and important facets of the Gail Project. Even though you aren’t a historian, I’d like to know- what are your personal research interests?
T: My personal research interests are the history of Okinawa, food ways (particularly beni imo), and how external influences continue to shape contemporary Okinawa.I’m interested in how Charles Gail moved about in Okinawa and how he made the images he did from technical and aesthetic standpoints. We know already know a few of the places where he made photos and have leads on a few more, thanks to Lex’s 2015 research. Seeing the places for myself may help explain why he made the images and also by taking images of the same places, we can see how the landscape has changed. The photographs Gail made of people are also interesting, not only finding folks who appear in them but how close Gail was when he made the photos. Rephotography will also be important to understanding; I will use a similar camera used by Gail and photograph people doing similar things.
J: Hopefully our trip to Okinawa will be fruitful in discovering more about Gail’s photos :) Finally, I want to know what you like to do for fun.
T: I like to bicycle, hand plane, cook and eat and watch documentaries for fun.
J: Hand planing sounds interesting! Thank you for interviewing with me, Tosh.

As We1less entered the room, he lay on the sofa, sighed with relief and said, “I’m (as tired as) a salted fish.” (*he feels dead tired)
