Team Rocket in the english anime remind me of 1960s comic book villians or something. If we need a more topical (to their creation) reference, then they've got the same appeal as the weird villians on saturday morning cartoons in the 80s. A flamboyance, a pathetic nearly 0% success rate, a propensity for alliteration, etc. Seriously, they get some fine alliteration and wordplay. The jokes are all just puns most of the time, but that's still wordplay. It's still clever, especially if you're rewriting a script from one language to another.

I imagine all of this is the same in the original japanese, but I don't know japanese (and don't feel like watching 80+ subtitled episodes). But it feels like a reasonable assumption that they'd be equally entertaining there.

Oh and unrelated note...there is a chance I remembered the voices of the Team Rocket trio so well that I did impressions of them when reading books out loud as a kid. I have no proof, but I think my voice for Apollo in Percy Jackson is basically just my impression of James from Team Rocket. The only places I can think I would've stolen my "arrogant male characters" voice from would be Kenneth Branagh as Gilderoy Lockhart in the Harry Potter movies and then James from Team Rocket. And I feel like Meowth and that New York accent...when I have to pull out that kind of accent, I do go for something kind of like meowths voice. Mind you, it could also sound like danny devito or any generic celebrities with thicker nyc area accents.

The only voice I know I definitely stole from movies is the voice I use for any old wizards in fiction. Dumbledore, Gandalf, all of them just get my impression of Ian McKellen. It's not a good impression, I don't think. But it eventually morphed into being my internal monologue voice for a very long time. It still sometimes is, but it comes and goes.

I'm getting distracted now, so I'll shut up. But see? My dad's at work, and all I can do is write posts. sigh...
