The fact that I can’t find any good Roth and Layla fanfiction (The Dark Elements series by Jennifer Armentrout) is so depressing. If anyone comes across some let me know....
Stone Cold Touch (#2 Dark Elements)
Summary: Layla is back at school and convinced that the Lilin race has not been created and Roth is out there. The only thing that keeps her at rest is Zayne. Zayne is her protector and as the story moves on they become more as Layla battle between being herself with Roth or being sheltered by Zayne. And between all of that, find Lilin.
Thoughts: This story being mainly about Layla getting closer to Zayne was stunning. I thought Zayne was some type of monk that always said the right thing at the right time, but he is far from it. He made Layla feel like she belonged once again, and eventually they touched and kissed all page long (sorry for spoiler, but it annoyed me).
Zayne is too nice for Layla; he keeps chasing after this low self esteem succubus(which are naturally hot) who could take his pure soul and make him a freaking hybrid gargoyle with red eyes, and so on and so for. Then, then... every time she was with Zayne she was like: oh Roth; funny how they are so similar, and I need to stop thinking about Roth. But eventually she ended up in Roth’s bed over and over again. You feel my drift? Layla does not need to be messing with Zayne’s emotions and Roth... please, what emotions?.
Roth is still amazing even though he was lying and believe me, I know he was lying about how he felt about Layla. I wanted Astaroth to stay in the book the whole time, even though Layla kept pushing him away, Gosh, I just wanted him to turn her bad but no, “you make me want to be good.” Just obsess over her like Paimon obsessed about Litith, that would be more interesting. But in books where the main character wants to be the hero, you cant turn them bad:(
I guess, I’m just trying to tell you that I HATE Layla like the Grinch hate Christmas. The book was predictable, I guess because she was always around Zayne who is a predictable person, but for the love Bambi, Layla needs to get her -ish together.
And Sam.... Sam was the weakest link and if you ever read any sci-fi novels you know when someone becomes sexy, something is wrong with them. This is depressing because in real life if something is wrong with you, you look like death, and then you die. Characters in books, they resemble a dark beauty and lust after everything, and Sam got the look. I knew it was something cold hearted going on with him, but I think he will soon be my favorite character.
Anyways I would like to say Roth made everything better and I am ready to read Every Last Breath.
And I’m telling you, Layla and Roth are going to be together(Team Roth!)
3/5
... am in love with you Layla Shaw. Yesterday. Today. Tomorrow. A hundred decades from now, I will still be in love with you, and it will be as fierce today as it will be a decade later.
Every Last Breath by Jennifer Armentrout
Team Roth vrs Team Zayne
With ‘Every Last Breath’ coming out on Tuesday, I just thought I’d share why I’m Team Roth.
(SPOILERS AHEAD)
I acknowledge, that Roth is no Angel (obviously he’s the Crown Prince of Hell), for example he shouldn’t have brought Layla to that underground nightclub and he DEFINITELY shouldn’t have left her alone there.
He also definitely should have told her that Abbot had threatened her life, even if he thought that she would be safe if he stayed away, Layla has got to know that her life is in danger if she pursues Roth or even if she behaves in an un-Warden-like way.
HOWEVER, Roth showed Layla a whole new world a new fantastic point of view (we couldn’t have a post about Roth without adding in a Disney reference)
Roth showed her that being a demon doesn’t equate being evil, and that she shouldn’t hate that side of herself but accept it, she’s just as much Demon as she is Warden.
Roth also doesn’t underestimate her, when he’s got a mission to go on he lets her know he includes her, he respects her ability to take care of herself and figure things out for herself, while still protecting her.
Roth can kiss her without dying
She can relax completely around Roth and doesn’t have to worry about him judging her or hurting him.
The fact that Roth is a major Disney fan can not go without acknowledgement.
Now lets move onto Zayne
I think Zayne and Layla both idealise each other far too much. For far too long Zayne was this unattainable object to Layla. He was her hero, and she put him up on a pedestal. I have to wonder if she really is in love with Zayne or is she in love with the idea of him.
When they start up a relationship in ‘Stone Cold Touch’, it feels like Layla is jumping into it because she feels she should. It’s kind of like ‘ This is what I always wanted.....isn’t it?’ and it doesn’t feel sincere.
Zayne idealises Layla as well, he can’t accept her demon side, at least not fully. Layla does have a bad side, she does want to munch on human souls. I’m not saying that Layla is evil or anything, what I am saying is that Zayne can be a bit blind to Layla’s darker side to the point of stupidity (kissing her was REALLY stupid and reckless) I know he thought that she would never hurt him and bla bla bla but what if something had happened to him (I’m talking about the first time they kissed) is he really willing to place that kind of guilt on her shoulders.
And lastly Zayne treats Layla like a delicate flower instead of the strong half warden half demon, daughter of Lilith that she is. (and p.s can we take a minute to think about how unfairly women are treated in this series?! They are basically nothing but baby making machines. Why can’t the Wardens mate with humans, I’m sure their offspring would be able to kick some demon butt. What about Lesbians, can they go out and kick Demon butt? Why don’t they freeze their eggs, and use surrogates. so that they can do whatever they want? I really hope this is addressed in the last book. )
Having said all this I would be fine with Layla ending up alone, and not getting with either. I mean she as only ever kissed two guys in her life, how would she not fall in love with them.
So I didn't read the dark elements during the time JLA gave the fans the choice to vote between ROTH and Zayne but I'm hoping y'all chose Roth
Review: White Hot Kiss (The Dark Elements #1) - JLA
4/5
SPOILERS
Moving onto my forever growing "to read" list, I decided that I needed some more JLA in my life. No doubt, she's one of my favourite authors with her Lux and Convenant series held close to my heart. JLA always has the ability to write well. I mean, badass female protagonists, hot cocky guys, exchanges between characters that make you laugh and all things other-worldly... what's not to like?
So, White Hot Kiss didn't disappoint.
It satisfied the criteria of a typical JLA book, though I wish she could surprise me a little bit more and mix it up somehow, I'm more than happy with what I've read.
Summary of the book? Gargoyles (which really throws a spanner in the works since we're not talking about vampires for once), blood and gore, Hell and Heaven, hot guys and steamy moments, Layla kicking ass and demons.
What I particularly enjoyed about White Hot Kiss were the characters. Characters play a crucial part in any book, they're like the make or break point; love em or hate em, they make you enjoy the book and appreciate how they're all connected in the scheme of things. JLA does it again with her ability to make characters that we love and invest emotions in. In comparison to some female characters, JLA's girls ALWAYS kick ass and have a lot of sass (life goals). I honestly love JLA for that. It's always refreshing to see a character come out of their shell and go full frontal on the kick-ass scale as well as embracing their strengths despite inner doubts. Layla Shaw is strong is so many ways. She's been continually told to suppress her demon side in order to feel a sense of belonging with her Warden side; to feel ashamed. But with Roth entering her life, she starts to realise that maybe demons aren't so bad, and with the shit fest that goes down at the end of the book, I think it's safe to say that the Wardens agree with this too. I also loved that Layla never once ran from a situation where the people she loved were in danger, unless she was consistently told to. I loved that despite her limited fight knowledge, she still managed to throw a few punches and kicks to the groin before allowing someone to help her. She just made me feel proud if anything. Plus, she wasn't overly annoying on the whole "I can never have Zayne" issue, so props to JLA on that.
Without a doubt, I'm on Team Roth. I mean Zayne is great and all, but like, come on. Roth. Astaroth. Sexy, mysterious, dark, cocky, self-centered bastard? OBVIOUSLY, THE BETTER GUY. Well, from experiences with JLA books, the cocky guy always ends up really loveable, so to hell with Zayne (ironic HAHA). But besides Roth being a total hottie, I love that he's so soft and patient when it comes to Layla. I like how he makes her feel proud to be part-demon as opposed to the Wardens making her feel ashamed and unwanted. In each other, they managed to find a place where they could both be happy with who they were and ultimately enjoy each other's company. The thing about Roth is that he's more good than bad; he's willing to sacrifice his safety continually for Layla and always comes out successful in ensuring her life is still intact. And even though he's keen on getting all kinds of hot and sweaty, he still respects Layla's decision when she says that she's unsure of going all the way. So he's definitely earned a page in my book... or the entire book. He's got a place in my heart so God forbid something happens to him now.
I don't have many things negative to say about White Hot Kiss. In all honesty, it's the perfect blend of a good story and new adult fiction. I was only unable to give it a 5/5 because everything just felt too typical. It was almost predictable in a way. I mean, two forces against one another and somehow coming together to fight with a common goal of saving humanity.. awfully like the Lux series. Two really hot guys who want only the best for the girl, it's in every damn book out there. A surprisingly young but wise kid who seems to know everything? Not sure if Luc or Tony. But despite these common themes in JLA books, I still find myself hooked, which goes to show that it's still a pretty damn good book. It makes me wonder about the lengths JLA goes to come up with these ideas and thus, appreciate it a bit more.
I'm excited to see what happens in the next book and then the book after that and so on. It didn't leave me disappointed AT ALL, in fact I'm kind of thankful its typical JLA because I know I'll be in good hands (I only wish they were Roth's hands... or Seth's or Daemon's). I know I'll be welcoming a bunch of amazing characters into my life (only to see them get hurt and have my feelings completely screwed over but that's just a sacrifice I'm continually willing to make) as well as knowing that no matter what happens, I'll be satisfied with ending. JLA never does crappy endings.
So if you're a fan of JLA or just all things steamy and action packed, then I recommend you get your ass up and get your hands on White Hot Kiss.
And if you've already it? Holla at me.
Zayne or Roth?
A difficult choice must be made. Two hot boys struggling, competing to win the heart of half-Warden, half-demon Layla. Let me weigh in their points...
*Warning: Spoiler alert! Stop if you haven't read Stone Cold Touch yet.
Zayne
-He has known Layla for a long time now, acting as her best friend, protector and brother (although the latter seems to be unacceptable because we found out later in second book that he had feelings for her all along).
- He was there for Layla when Roth turned his back on her. He was patient, consoling her at times that she was broken.
- He is overprotective of Layla that he'd rather lock her up inside her room rather than watch her get hurt.
- Not to mention Zayne is really hot! With that eight pack and intense stare of his...swoon! (remember that part in SCT ? *winks*)
- Zayne knows how to make Layla feel important. He goes to dates with her and makes her feel like she's the only girl that matters.
*Zayne wasn't there when Petr attacked Layla and the sole reason for it was he was mad at her. Damn, if I was Layla, it would take weeks before I'd talk to Zayne again.
*If he liked Layla from the start, why did he show interest onto Danika and made Layla feel that he'll never return her feelings? If you'd answer "because he needs to follow the orders of his father", then why did he choose to fight for his feelings toward her this time. Is it because of the competition with Roth?
*Zayne never got to sacrifice that much for Layla...not really. Even if he truly loved her, he should've fought for it from the very beginning, no matter what his father or his clan might say.
Roth
-Roth is bad... HOT damn BAD! As the Crown Prince of Hell, Roth was undeniably a temptation to sin, not that I blame Layla. And the tattoos? Thumper and Bambi and the little kittens...hmmm... sign me up for that!
-Roth gave Layla the freedom that she never truly experienced when she was with the Wardens. He made her realize that being a demon might be necessary in order to see the goodness of a person hidden inside. With him, Layla can truly be herself.
- Roth made Layla feel things she have never felt before. Passion, adventure...even lust, all of these things seemed impossible when she was with Zayne because of her soul-sucking ability.
-Let us be reminded that Roth took Zayne's place in the fiery pits of hell because he knew how much Zayne meant to Layla. He sacrificed himself just so she could attain the happiness that she deserves. (I lost myself the moment I found you.)
-He avoided Layla, chose to hurt her and hid his feelings so as to protect her from Abbot. He came back just so he could return to her, to be with her. But when Abbot threatened to kill Layla if Roth chooses to continue his intimacy with her, he has no choice but to bow down and sacrifice his love for her. But at the end of SCT, we see him spill his heart-wrenching feelings to Layla and chooses to fight beside her even if it means disobeying direct orders from Hell.(No matter what, I love you.)
*Roth hurt Layla. He shouldn't have said those awful things to her in the first place. The common problem with boys is that they assume girls couldn't handle these kinds of obstacles that is why boys take matters into their own hands, even if it means hurting the girl.
* He kept things from Layla, some of which were very important.
So, which of the two boys do you think rightfully deserves Layla?
