I always think of this cartoon whenever there is a lovely pink sunset (like tonight) and then I have to resist the urge to say “It’s magenta!” around other people because it would be too weird to explain.

SCA's All Female Racing Team Is The Team To Beat In Volvo's Ocean Race Around the World
Amazing Women Everywhere #amazingwomeneverywhere
Let me start by saying I’m pretty proud that the horse training world boasts a favorably disproportionate number of female athletes compared to many international sports. In fact, it’s one of a limited number of sports in which women and men compete as equals. In my ongoing quest for athletic role models for my own little equestriennes, I have stumbled upon one of the most impressive displays of female empowerment in sports; in life: Team SCA, the first professional all-female team to compete in the Volvo Ocean Race in more than a decade (http://www.teamsca.com/awemosaic).
Now, despite my upbringing very close to nautical Newport, Rhode Island (not surprisingly one of the stopovers during the race), I have no firsthand knowledge of sailing. Yet, it doesn’t take great imagination to envision the immeasurable courage, strength, determination, and teamwork that it would take for anyone to race on a sailboat for nine months! The Volvo Ocean Race is the toughest offshore sailing race in the world, considered the Everest of racing. It covers 39,379 nautical miles. That’s right. (See photo lest you not be duly impressed.) Clearly, these women are fierce competitors and are truly the embodiment of adventurers. Consider the multitude of challenges standing in their way, likely on a daily basis, that threaten to derail the years of preparation and many months in the race thus far. It’s daunting, yet SO empowering! Their courage would make anyone want to take on new challenges in pursuit of reaching one’s own full potential. I want my daughters to see these women of Team SCA and truly understand the adventurous spirit such accomplishment requires. Regardless of the race’s outcome, it is my opinion these women have already won. I want my girls to know that Team SCA illustrates the notion that it’s “the journey, not the destination” in sports competition and, more importantly, in life. Perhaps I should take my own advice?
Where are they right now, you ask? Team SCA is “wet and wild” in fifth place at 87 miles behind the leaders in Leg 5, Auckland to Itajai, Brazil, which is an impressively desolate expanse of ocean. Nevertheless, they are enjoying fine sailing weather in the Southern Ocean, despite some rather squally days of late. Setbacks are temporary for these athletes; they’re remarkably patient and focused in the face of problems. At this point, Team SCA is eager to catch the wind and gain. Check out their progress and some awesome pics at on http://www.teamsca.com.
Thinking I want to meet these ‘adventurephiles,’ I checked them out at http://www.teamsca.com/awemosaic. Team SCA has rightly identified this event as a chance for awesome women everywhere to be celebrated. The AWE mosaic on Team SCA’s site (http://www.teamsca.com/awemosaic in case you didn’t catch it) gives anyone the chance to feature the woman that inspired you. Although these incredible sailors are the personification of female empowerment, there are women everywhere that inspire us to achieve, so Team SCA wants you to include the amazing women in your life on their AWE mosaic. Go ahead, put your Mom on there!

Amazing women are everywhere! TEAM SCA Inspires Women.
It all starts with SCA, a leading global hygiene and sustainable paper products company. SCA is sponsoring an all-female team, called Team SCA that is currently sailing in a race around the world in the Volvo Ocean Race. It’s the “Everest of sailing races;” an audaciously tough journey in even optimum conditions, requiring herculean strength of will. The team includes fifteen of the boldest, baddest, female competitors out there from around the world. These women are awe inspiring. Their courageous pursuit of conquering the oceans with that capricious and sometimes elusive wind is taking them on a nine month scramble across the oceans of the world. If you check their progress on www.teamsca.com, you’ll see that their trials are many, but they’ve got the dedication and guts to push through.
Impressed by the women’s empowerment, Sponsor SCA has rightly chosen the Team SCA journey to launch a campaign called Amazing Women Everywhere. In its AWE Mosaic, the campaign features diverse stories from around the globe of women who empower others through hard work and achievement- illustrating that Amazing Women are Everywhere. SCA seeks submissions of a digital photo and story to pay tribute to the multitude of wonderful women in whatever role they take- mothers, business women, charity workers, and women who have had to overcome adversity to http://www.teamsca.com/awemosaic). Furthermore, not only do submissions give you a chance to recognize the incredible women in your life, but SCA will recognize them too through a donation to World Wide Fund for Nature, which embodies their commitment to creating value for both people and nature. For each photo uploaded to the mosaic, SCA will donate 1 EURO to WWF. WWF’s mission is to stop the degradation of our planet’s natural environment, and build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature.
The AWE mosaic (http://www.teamsca.com/awemosaic) celebrates amazing women everywhere AND benefits the planet, so I’ve been thinking about the amazing women in my life. There aren’t any world-traversing, seafaring competitors in my immediate sphere, but I am happy to say that I have been fortunate to have my own unique inspiration. My mother is pretty incredible, so I must not be remiss in giving credit where credit is due, but I have also been thinking about a different woman whose generous heart and work ethic never fails to impress me.
She’s a former student of mine: Betsy Coco. I’m a horse trainer and a riding instructor, so my husband and I get to help people achieve their equestrian dreams. At 14, Betsy Coco came to us knowing how to ride and loving horses, but having a long way to go to achieve her goal to compete at the Morgan breed World Championships in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. While her parents went through a divorce, Betsy put on a brave face and worked tirelessly to become the rider and athlete she needed to be to get to the championships. She fell off ALL the time, but she always landed on her feet and got back on. I’m smiling just thinking about it, because her attitude was unfailingly pleasant and she took criticism with grace. I think even Team SCA would be impressed with her fortitude! (Check http://www.teamsca.com/awemosaic) Well, to make a long story short, she DID get to the world championships and got herself a fourth place, teaching me a thing or two about determination but that’s not where the story ends.
Betsy was blessed with many gifts but she took that unerring work ethic and her generous heart to give back to those in need. During college, she started her own small charity ABC Haiti Project, in which she offers a variety of literacy and hygiene education projects and field trips in effort to enrich children’s lives. Though she would say her own discomforts are minimal in comparison, Betsy takes on a pretty rudimentary lifestyle on her long trips to Haiti. She gives herself wholeheartedly to the project and thrives on doing for those children. She’s not quite (phew!) young enough to be my child, but in many ways I feel like she’s a little bit mine, and I am so proud of the young woman she has become. More importantly, her incredible work ethic and kindness are amazing, like Team SCA. And so the student becomes the teacher. SCA is right- Amazing women ARE everywhere! http://www.teamsca.com/awemosaic I’m adding her to the AWE mosaic. :)
What women do you know that deserve to be on the mosaic?
