As season 13 approaches, I have seen several posts about Cas potentially getting a new wardrobe. I hate the “new” trench coat as much as the next person. It has absolutely no shape to it and is really unflattering. I would love to see Cas/Misha get to wear some different outfits. However I feel the trench coat  shouldn’t be completely removed from the visual narrative. 

In 8.07 after Cas returns from purgatory and goes to clean himself up. He walks into the bathroom still wearing his scrubs from the hospital and his trench coat, completely covered in dirt. When Castiel comes out of the bathroom he is wearing a new suit and the trench coat is clean and repaired. I don’t know if there was a J.C. Penny’s in that bathroom or what, but somehow Cas acquired new clothes.  In 9.01 Cas is forced to leave his trench coat behind in a laundry mat. This appears to be a difficult decision for him but necessary because he’s thirsty. He instead takes some abandoned clothes and this is the outfit we see him in until 9.06.   When we see Cas in 9.09 he is wearing a suit and tie. I am wondering if Cas slowly saved up his money that he earned from the Gas n’ Sip to be able to buy this suit.  The white dress shirt that he wore on his “date” in 9.06 being the first part he bought. Once Cas steal’s Theo’s grace he arrives back at the bunker in 9.10 in the “new” trench coat. It’s unclear if he bought this with his last pay check from the gas n’ sip or is shoplifting just something angels do. What is clear though is that Cas choose to get this trench coat on his own without anyone else’s input. As much as I hate how it looks there is something endearing about Cas not understanding that it’s not flattering, just that he wanted a trench coat. Similar to how when kids begin to dress themselves they don’t worry about matching. 

Castiel choose to repair his trench coat in 8.07 when he could have replaced it. He must have gone to a store to get(steal?) the new suit. Castiel could have continued to wear just the suit he got before 9.09. Instead he got a new trench coat. For some reason Cas likes this outfit. When Dean insults Cas’s outfit in 12.07 saying that he looks like “a third-tier agent.” Cas seems genuinely insulted and throws an insult right back. When we see Cas in a female vessel in 12.10 She is wearing a long tan coat over a white outfit. The similarity to Castiel’s preferred outfit is interesting. I know this was for the viewers benefit but maybe Cas told his vessel what kind of outfit to wear. If Cas asked Jimmy to put a trench coat on that wouldn’t be the strangest thing Cas asked Jimmy to do.

If Cas gets a new outfit I would like the trench coat ensemble to stick around in some way because I think Cas likes it for some reason. Everybody has a favorite outfit. Cas could wear it only on cases to help with his anxiety. Then back at the bunker change into something more comfortable.

This post was originally part of a larger post I am working on that has a lot to do with Castiel’s self-Image. While how we present ourselves and dress is part of our self-image I didn’t feel that this was relevant to any of my later conclusions. So, it gets its own post while I am trying to edit. I very kindly ask that you don’t comment on what you think the trench coat represents on this post. That’s not what it was about.
