I have been dreading writing this, but here goes: we recently found a mast cell tumor on Jub Jub’s right ear. We caught it early, and she is getting the best care in LA, so the outlook is good. I wouldn’t say anything except the only treatment is to remove the tumor, and with it a portion of her ear. It’s purely cosmetic, she will hardly notice, and she’ll still be able to hear. I’ve made my peace about the ear, but of course we’re still worried about the outcome. Selfishly, I will miss her soft black ear, which she used so artfully to express alarm, or confusion, or pliant submission which often foreshadows a desire for food and affection. Jub Jub is my first dog, the only pet I’ve ever been responsible for. She is so special and because so many of you love her, I wanted to let you know so you can keep her in your thoughts before her surgery on Wednesday. It’s been a tough few weeks and I’m trying to stay off the Internet as much as possible these days, so if I miss a message from you, that’s why.
