Aesop's Fables (78,79) The Owl and the Grasshopper An Owl, who lived in a hollow tree, was in the habit of sleeping all day and eating during the night. One day, she couldn’t get any sleep because of the chirping of a Grasshopper who now lived nearby in the tree’s branches. She kept begging him to think of others, but the Grasshopper only chirped louder. Finally, the Owl couldn’t stand it any longer. She was determined to get rid of the pest with a trick. In the nicest way, she said to the Grasshopper, “It’s not that I don’t like your singing. I can’t sleep because I love to stay up so I can hear it! I would love to treat you to dinner and listen to you again. Won’t you come inside and join me?” The Grasshopper was flattered by her praise, and his mouth watered when she mentioned the meal. He said he would be happy to join her. But as soon as he got inside the hollow of the tree, the Owl pounced on him and ate him for dinner. *LESSON: Flattery is not a proof of true admiration. *LESSON: Do not let sweet words throw you off your guard against an enemy. ************************************************* It's easy to jump on board with everything a person is saying when it is "finessing" you and sounding better than you could imagine.
