He had fucked up, snapped back at Troy, not expecting James to be right behind him. The two of them together were like a pair of fucking kangaroo, bouncing around and throwing punches and banging his face off of rocks. It was nothing compared to the SHIT they had already been through but he was a little sore about it. It seemed like again and again he would build up competence and confidence, thinking ‘we’ve been to Hell and back, I can handle this’, but again and again, he gets handed his ass to him. It just proved he actually couldn’t fend for himself. Without his wrist rocket or El’s powers or Steve’s punches or Max’s badassery or his mother's furious phone calls to Troy's parents, what was he?? A kid. A nobody. A  L O S E R. He was so inadequate... Why did the party even need him?? Still, he put on a brave face for Max. It wasn’t like it hurt, he just didn’t want her picking a fight for him. That would just make it that much worse.
