Alice in Wonderland

WELCOME TO THE TEA PARTY!

@BookBugsUK we are celebrating Lewis Carroll's timeless children's classic, Alice in Wonderland. Written in 1865 the book is responsible for the iconic characters, the White Rabbit, Cheshire Cat and Queen of Hearts. It has also had countless adaptation in film and theatre, so why do we love Alice so much??

The book is complete imagination and fantasy of the child, exploring different world's and environments from a child's perspective. Over exaggerated characters like the caterpillar, fantastical environments like the woods and the flowers, lend themselves so well to be adapted into animated film and theatre.

As such, the book has also had several illustrators try to capture the imagination that Carroll intended. Carroll himself sketch 37 original illustrations and since then artists like John Tenniel (illustrator of the first published edition), Harry Rountree, recently Helen Oxenbury and even Salvador Dali has put pen to paper to try and represent Carroll's creative world of Alice's Wonderland.

Queen Victoria was apparently an avid fan of the book when it was first published in the UK in 1865. In 1961 The Folio Society reprints the text with original images from John Tenniel. In 1998 one of 6 only known copies of the original manuscripts written by Carroll is sold to an anonymous American buyer at auction for  $1.54 million, the most expensive children's book to be sold of its time. In 2015 Alice celebrated her 150th Anniversary proving she is still as popular as ever!
