Tearlingathon update!

I will be liveblogging The Fate of the Tearling so if you don't want to be spoiled, please blacklist #trott or #tearlingathon.

So I have a confession to make.

When I started reading The Fate of the Tearling, I got so gripped that I read halfway through it (currently on page 273) and didn't get a chance to liveblog any of it lol. So instead, I will be liveblogging the other half of the book.

But first, I want to summarise what I've read so far:

Interesting to know that The Fetch's real name is Gavin and that he was involved in the assassination of Jonathan Tear with Row Finn. I predicted that Gavin was her father but now I'm not so sure... He is immortal but Kelsea has strong Tear blood so that doesn't seem right...

The way Tear tells Katie not be afraid of him gives me an inkling that he is her father somehow. Tear's population did increase rapidly... Could it be that Tear impregnated the women? That way he could have more heirs? And Gavin could still be Kelsea's father? Just a random thought.

Kelsea can look into the past without her sapphires?? Cool!

New theory: What if Kelsea is a child of the past? When Kelsea was imagining herself as Katie Rice at the moment where she's running away from this creature in the dark, Kelsea finds herself holding the same rock that Katie was holding. That means that the past and present are linked. What if Tear had found a way to travel through time itself? Maybe they saved one of their children that way? What if she's Jonathan's child??

Father Tyler is alive and apparently in the creche...

I like reading from Aisa's point of view. In the second book, I felt close to Lily because of what she went through and for this book, I feel the same about Aisa. It's nice to see how she tries to fight her fear towards her father and wishes to become strong like the Queen's guard and the Caden.

The Holy Father is being an ass once again by getting help from the Mort army and invading the keep. And increasing the bounty on Father Tyler's head.

I'm also enjoying Katie's POV. Even though she cares for Row, her loyalty lies with Tear. I think Tear could see into the future like his son and knows that Row has something to do with the corruption of their land. That's why he didn't include him in their training.

I think Row is the only person who hasn't changed. Popular with the ladies but still creepy. And now he has bloodthirsty children.

Kelsea makes a deal with the Red Queen to travel into the past to find a way to defeat Row. Quite a deadly alliance. Not for long though.

The Tearling Trilogy by Erika Johansen

Summary

So... Years after buying the first installment, I finally finished the series thanks to @shadowtearling‘s readalong :) My buddy @nerdishfeels is still reading it (I hope you’ll love it :D)

Writing

I liked the writing a lot more in the second and third books. It starts off as okay if unremarkable, and grows to become really good at conveying multiple voices.

Story

The story is incredibly intricate and original, I was truly impressed by the way the author weaves multiple points of view into one cohesive narrative. It gets truly dark at times, while retaining hope in the good of people, I really appreciated that.

World

The world is constructed in layers and revealed along with the story, almost as if it were a character in its own right! Most of the questions I had after finishing the first book were elaborated on in the rest of the series, and the whole is consistent.

Characters

After the first book, I was curious about the main antagonist, and my curiosity was definitely satisfied! I also really enjoyed Kelsea’s growth, and all the secondary characters that get their own voices weaved in the story. I think I’m gonna miss the characters, actually...

Conclusion

How have people let me ignore this series for so long??? (joking, I’m glad they all were out by the time I started) It is one of the most original series I’ve ever read, and I’m truly impressed at the way the authors balances everything. Definitely recommend!

The Queen of the Tearling

Finally FINALLY I’m reading this! I’ve been delaying the last million years because I was terrified. Me being so fickle, I didn’t want to have to experience losing love for my favorite series. Now that my drama is semi-over, I’m excited to get reintroduced into this world!!!

Already I’m seeing so many little bits of foreshadowing! And in this round, I’m trying to keep track of everyone in the Queen’s Guard, their appearances, mannerisms, and other things to note.

Dyer - the rare redhead

Mhurn - who i didn’t think was blonde??????? especially given that 🙊

Elston - missing teeth, broad shoulders, and iirc also Gay

Mace - menacing and has this tough guy persona on the outside, but maybe a 100 pages later a total softie

Carroll - you will be missed 😢

Pen - he’s THIRTY 🤔 i never remembered that bit i always gave him the age of 28 bc all i remembered as her first impression was that he’s close to thirties

Galen - uh... i remember nothing????? i actually almost forgot about him lmao
