For jimkirksapple for her Tears Challenge prize! Really, super late, but here it is! She wanted Bones trying to teach Jim to dance and Jim being insistent about leading despite Bones saying no. So Jim distracts him enough to take over.
Jim wasn’t the hick everyone liked to think he was. He had gone to a good school, he spoke well and he’d been raised by an active member of the Starfleet elite. Sure he was raised in Iowa, but that was because Winona had wanted to get away, far away. Iowa wasn’t exactly on anyone’s to do list so that’s where they ended up.
Growing up in Iowa didn’t make him a hick, but it certainly didn’t make him part of high society either. He had no idea what Starfleet expected from him at a charity ball.
“Okay on my lead.” Bones took Jim’s hand into his and set his other just at the base of the blond’s shoulder blade. “Step back on your right.” Bones moved forward carefully to make sure he wasn’t going to step on Jim’s foot.
“Why can’t I lead?” Jim scowled down at their feet.
“Because I’m the one teaching you and I’m leading.” Bones rolled his eyes and slid his foot to the side in the next step. “Stop looking at your feet, no one will dance with you if you look at their feet the entire time.”
Jim scowled at Len’s face instead.
“If I’m going to dance with other people then I should be leading.” He carefully followed through on the few steps that Bones had showed him. “You just like ordering me around.”
Bones sighed loudly but continued to lead them around the room, shifting them just slightly so that they spun while making their way across the floor.
“I’m doing you a favor, stop complaining.”
“You owed me a favor.”
“You are such a child.”
Jim grinned and moved a little closer.
“You like it when I fight with you. You’d get bored if I were anything close to agreeable.” The grin had turned into a smirk and Bones rolled his eyes.
“Getting things done in half the time is not boring, it’s my new life long dream.” The banter was easy to fall into so Bones let it go on, at least this way Jim wasn’t complaining about not leading.
“Aw, you planning to spend the rest of your life with me.” Jim fluttered his eyelashes at the doctor mockingly. “Bones, I didn’t know you cared.”
“Planning means I have some kind of say in it. You’re a trap, Kirk. You pulled me by pretending to be level headed when I was drunk and now I can’t get out.” He tried to take a step back from Jim, noticing for the first time that the kid had been edging in close enough that their chests were almost touching.
“You know,” Jim had started to frown. “If you keep talking like that, I’m going to start thinking you don’t like having me around.”
“Is that all it takes?” Len smirked.
“Asshole.”
“Dickhead.”
“I bet I could prove that you like me.” Jim pressed forward again and Len snorted.
“How exactly would you do that?” He was about to taunt Jim but the insult was lost when the captain softly brushed his lips against Len’s. The doctor swallowed hard and pulled back to look Jim in the eye, searching his face for the scathing humor that he was sure would follow. All he got was a hand on the back of his neck to pull him back in for a much more demanding kiss. He let himself get lost in the feeling of Jim’s lips moving against his, only vaguely aware that they were still moving in practiced steps through Len’s living room. Jim finally pulled away, a pleased smile gracing his flushed face.
“I told you I could prove it.”
Shaking himself from the kiss induced daze Bones scowled.
“That doesn’t prove that I like you.”
“Maybe not, but the fact that you’re letting me lead does.”
Sure enough Jim was now the one leading their simple box step.
“Dammit, Jim!” Len pulled his hands away from the captain and lunged forward, hands going for the blonds neck. Jim yelped and scrambled away, running as fast as he could towards Bones’ bedroom.
By the time he caught the idiot they were both laughing too hard to bother dancing again, but they didn’t seem to concerned about the lessons. No one but Bones was going to be dancing with Jim at the ball anyway.
