As someone who’d always been confounded by the reputation for excellence attributed to Tebaldi, it was a relief to hear this.
Okay, so I’m going to share three awesome recordings of this aria. Callas is perhaps supreme in this, but I am a sucker for beautiful singing, and this is the definition of that term. Some might say Tebaldi’s interpretation lacks character, but as Toscanini once said, Tebaldi had the voice of an angel.

The aria proper is sung with exquisite grace, but the lines from Racine’s Bajazet are marred by two ugly aspirates: “Del sultano Hamuratte m’arrendo hall’imper.” Tebaldi would never have allowed herself such a thing when singing, but her diction curiously seems to fail her when she does not have the music to support her.
