The Midwife laid in her nest pondering the future, the past and anything in between. She had to come to terms with something. With Tebby, ah, Meifen. Why was she so envious that they chose to use their older name? It wasn't fair to Meifen.
Still, it felt weird seeing them as her child when she knows they have parents elsewhere. It was as if she tried to adopt them. That isn't fair to the parents. But Meifen clearly wants that, surely the child is valued more than the parents? It must be. All for the children!
The Midwife loves that little creature and they love her. She can't abandon them, but neither can she let them rule her. She doesn't want to leave Deepnest, it has been her home for decades. If Meifen leaves, she'd have to live with it. All good things end, even childhood.
She decides to continue doing what she had been doing, loving them but not controlling them. It was the only reasonable solution she had. If Meifen leaves her then...she'd be alone.
And she'd live with the knowledge that her child is happy.
