Revised Abstract #1 + Tech Specs
Internet users purposefully create different identities on different platforms they use. They curate, manage, essentially control how they want to be seen. Data Selfie addresses the curiosity of: What about the data profile that is made of us by machines at Facebook, Google and co., the one profile we never get to see, but unconsciously create?! Can our data profiles help us understand ourselves?! Can it really?
Data Selfie aims to provide an innovative perspective on data mining, artificial intelligence and your online data identity and its use. This project consists of two parts: The first is a Chrome browser extension that tracks yourself while you interact with content on Facebook – what you type, what you read – and predicts your personality based on that data; the second is an installation that projects a visualization of the data set, which was mined by the artist through the usage of her tool for two weeks, on a glass surface. Depending on what side one stands it is harder or easier to access the information.
In the information age data dictates the economy. One can either hope that big data will solve all problems of humanity or fear a Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report like future lying ahead of us. Data Selfie is born out of the belief that both is possible. One thing is for sure data is defining our lives more and more. Therefore, it is important for especially those who are not hopeful nor fearful, who are indifferent to this topic to be aware of the power and influence of data of ourselves on ourselves.
Dimensions Width: 3m (~118in) _ Height: 2m (~78in)_ Depth: 2 x 1m (~39in)
Required Darkened room with glass front. (1205 or 1202). Cubicle in front of glass front with windows (3) that will have mirrors at each side, tbd if they are pivotable. Projector, possibly mounted at the ceiling. Laptop to screen time based data visualization film (2-3min loop). No internet connection required. 2 electricity outlets.
Interaction This installation is designed to have one main entry point (outside world), but it is encouraged to also see the projection from inside (representing inside Facebook). The visitor would see the wall with windows first as they walk around the exhibition. They recognize that it is quite hard to read what is projected by just looking through the mirrors (that reverse the text). So they are willing to go inside the room where they can see the whole visualization and can read with ease. If there are more than one person engaging with the installation they would even see each other which would enforce the idea of disparity of information access.
There will be an abstract available to read, as well as stickers and business cards and information for the visitors to try the Data Selfie Chrome Extension at home.
