Techno Brothers (Hirobumi Watanabe, 2023)

Like a Leningrad Cowboys, but somehow 10% more deadpan. And with synthesizers instead of guitars. And they don’t actually go anywhere, unable to find a way out of the rice plains of Tochigi. A tribute to his composer brother and a tribute to his hometown, perhaps. Half the movie is just still, straight-on shots of the brothers performing in their Man Machine-era Kraftwerk red shirts and black ties. The other half is their manager trying to find them gigs and denying the band all food. Adds up to a wonderful whole. Watanabe plays like 5 roles. I feel the same way about Hong Sang-soo sometimes: it’s really nice to see something in colour.
