Alicia Frankovich, Techno Botanics, 2026,
Quartz bronze mirror on stainless steel extrusion 4812.8 x 2855.3 mm
3D modelling: Tommaso Nervegna-Reed Courtesy of the artist and 1301SW Melbourne and Sydney This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its principal arts investment and advisory body. Techno botanics is part of a broader project that explores the potential for imaging and experiencing new ways and modes of imagining bodies, behaviours, atmospheres and environments, both human and non-human. As part of the project, Frankovich attempts to queer nature, and strives to find new ways of imagining the Anthropocene and the climate of late-capitalism. The large-scale, wall-based work engages in botanical and oceanic worlds, activating a sort of bio-technical imagination with quartz bronze mirror, a
material that is simultaneously warm- coloured, reflective and spacey. The
primary subject matter is bluebottles as colonies of beings, rather than individuals. Frankovich’s broader project spans from feather stars to marine invertebrates, from the world of plants to outer space. In doing so, she uses installation to connect the biosphere with the technosphere.
