What? NH-01987 didn’t understand but clearly he’d done something wrong. People were talking loudly in the corner of the room, men and women he didn’t recognize and who weren’t wearing the uniforms or lab coats the six year old was used to seeing. Regardless, he couldn’t pay attention to them because of the man standing right in front of him.
NH-01987 was sitting on some sort of slab, softer than he’d ever felt before, something square and fluffy at the top of it that his head had been resting on before he’d bolted up and practically screamed. It was a lot like the table the people in white coats would strap him to when they would poke and test him. And yet, nothing like that table.
His wide red eyes stared at the man in front of him, and he sat very still. If he did something he wasn’t supposed to, he might get puni– corrected. Corrections were painful. He swallowed the lump in his throat and realized his eyes were welling with tears. But he didn’t lift a hand, didn’t move a muscle, for fear of not being allowed to do so.
They had taken the kid far from where they first found him, not inside the biobag that most children his age were in, usually sleeping, growing, waiting for them to be adults. Cor could see all the modifications done to the boy. He looked him in the eye for a moment. “Take a deep breath. Relax.” Cor could see how nervous the kid looked.
“You’re safe now, all right? We’re going to take you out of here.” Cor knew there was some murmuring, so he turned to Monica, confirming his actions. “We will be extracting him from this place. He needs to get out of here.” Cor remarked. “We don’t know if tampering with the other bags might kill them. I don’t want to risk it. I think we better leave them alone.” The poor kid looked so confused when they came in -- someone almost tried to kill him too.
“Come here...” Cor hesitated. “Kid, lets get to the helicopter.” Again back to Monica. “They have a medical bird ready?” She agrees, explaining to him that what he’s hoping for the kid will be provided, but she still has some concerns about the kid going with them. “Can you walk on your own?”
