In 1924, the monthly magazine Das Neue Russland (New Russia) was launched in Berlin as a window introducing developments in the newly founded Soviet Union to the German-speaking world. Published by the German Society for Friendship with New Russia, it covered a wide range of topics including culture, economics, and literature. Sometimes issued as double issues, it delivered substantial content to its readers in both quantity and quality.
Its purpose was precisely to carefully convey the realities of post-revolutionary Russia—how it was reconstructing society and what cultural and economic changes it was undergoing—realities that remained largely unknown to the West. Until its final issue in 1932, Das Neue Russland continued to function as a vital medium for understanding the “new Soviet Union” within the German-speaking world.
