Talking About Technology, Media, Learning
Defining Technology:
TECHNOLOGY
The term technology comes from the word “techne” which means art or craft; it is the use of scientific knowledge for practical purposes or applications, whether in industry or in everyday life. The era of technology started when the wheel was invented back in 3500 B.C. in Mesopotamia. The main era of technology and invention started in the 18th century where the 1st industrial revolution begun in Great Britain. It is when various inventions of machine got invented so as the various types of development and production started.
There is also the so called Technological Literacy which is the ability to effectively use technology to access, evaluate, integrate, create and communicate information to enhance the learning process through problem-solving and critical thinking. Technological skills must be used to effectively utilize technology.( ex. . Word processing skills, spreadsheet skills, database skills, website design skills etc.)
CATEGORIES OF TECHNOLOGY
1. Biotechnology and Agriculture Technology- helps in the improvement of health and life expectancy of mankind.(ex. Medicine, bug resistance plant,)
2. Communication Technology-technology developed to aid our ability to communicate.(ex.radio, television, internet)
3. Energy and Power Technology-technology used to improve existing forms of energy and create new forms of energy.(ex. Oil, nuclear , geothermal)
4. Production Technology a.Manufacturing technology-technology which involves the mass production of goods. b.Construction technology-technology which involves the creation of buildings and other structures.
5. Transportation Technology-used to move people and products from one place to another in a faster and more efficient way.(ex. Planes, cars, bicycles)
Aside from from the five categories of technology, there’s also these two which is the:
Information Technology (IT) or the use of any computers, storage, networking and other physical device to create, process, store, secure and exchange all forms of electronic data. It is used in enterprise operations as opposed to entertainment or personal technologies and some examples of it are software and support for office automation systems(ex.spreadsheets, word processing),user’s PC,and voice response system.
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) which refers to refers to all the technology used to handle telecommunications, broadcast media, intelligent building management systems transmission systems, and network-based control and monitoring functions.”It also refer to the convergence of audio-visual and telephone networks with computer networks through a single cabling or link system. It is also an extension of IT which means that everything that IT has ICT has it however, it’s scope is more broad.
We laso have the term ICT Literacy which is being literate to ICT gives knowledge and awareness in the importance, versatility, pervasiveness and its goodness and negative impact on sociaety. Some examples of the positive impacts are lower communication cost, paperless environment, and effective sharing of information.on the other hand, there are negative effects such as health problems, being individualistic and introvert, and unemployment situations.
EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
Educational Technology refers to the effective use of technological tools in learning which concerns an array of tools such media , networking and machiniries, and also taking considerations of theoretical perspective for an effective application. It is the application of technology in the educative process of education institutions.Educational technology goes way back in the 1900s with educational films with the use of motion pictures. In 1920 radio was coined to provide “schools in the air” in Ohio which continued until 1940s.Also, instructional television came and provided 242 channels for educational purposes during 1950s.Computers took place in 1950s- 1960s however, the big impact of computer to education started by 1980. In 1983, computers were used for instructional purposes with 40% in elementary and 75% in high school however there’s still alimited access for students, but when 1995 enter the ratio of computer per student became five to one and by 2000, 97% of schools have internet.
Technology in Education is the applicaton of technology in the operations of education institution.(ex. Finger print biometrics, computers, and sound system)
. TECHNOLOGY, MEDIA, AND LEARNING
Technology Integration to Learning
Technology integration is the use of technology tools in general content areas in education in order to allow students to apply computer and technology skills to learning and problem-solving.
The 4 Stages Of The Integration Of Technology In Learning
Stage 1: Learners are directed in their use of technology -.Learners are directed in their selection and constructivist use of technology in the learning process, traditionally to accomplish purely academic tasks that are fully accessible without the technology.Simply, learners are directed on their selection and understanding of the technology they will use to accomplish academic tasks.
Stage 2: This stage is characterized by powerful access to information, networks, and communities, but is mostly unable to leverage that access without supporting frameworks or planning -Asynchronous ( learning that do not occur in the same place at the same time.)access to information and peer networks. Some ability for learner to select platform, technology, or even content. Traditional classroom learning begins to be disrupted. Some examples of these using youtube, MOOCs and online classes.
Stage 3: Mobile technology erodes traditional classroom. Truly mobile learners should disrupt non-flexible curriculum. - Mobile learning experiences are inherently unpredictable, requiring varied communication, critical thinking, and aggressive resourcefulness. .Mobile technology is commonly used in online classrooms where students can study anytime and anywhere.
Stage 4: This final stage of technology implementation necessitates learners to consistently self-direct critical, core components of learning experiences. -Self-direction based on curiosity and play while supported by personalized learning algorithms and the connectivity of authentic networks characterizes this final stage of technology integration. It is the stage where students are able to decide on their own in terms of application of what they have studied in the last 3 stages.
Media
-is the plural form of medium, which describes any channel of communication whcih include anything from printed paper to digital data, and encompasses art, news, educational content and numerous other forms of information.
Digital media-which makes up an increasingly vast portion of modern communications which comprises encoded signals that are transmitted over various forms of physical and virtual media, such as fiber optic cable and computer networks. In digital media, learning also takes place by simply giving easy access to information. Learning networks are nurtured by digital avatars where dynamic connections is made such as in facebook and twitter..Learning can be game-based where children can play and study at the same time through educational games. There are also various digital platforms in which knowledge is easily disseminated and followed. Some examples of these are youtube, ITunes, and reddit.
Media in Learning
-various forms of media have been used to convey instruction and support to learning, such as : A.Instructional Media(traditional) such as textbook, chalkboards, and overhead projectors.
B. Mass Media used for education such as newspaper, television and radio.
C. Electronic Intructional Media such as computers, interactive videos and multimeda systems.
Technology has been an integral part of the world’s runnings. It’s also gave light to education by being an aid through integration, enhancement, medium, accessibility, and reservoir of knowledge to education and the people involved with it. Technology will be a positive tool if only people used it for good purposes. So let’s keep in mind that technology a powerful tool not only for education but for everything that’s why we need to look beyond presented purposes and see if it will cause us good or harm.
