A) Summary: In this TED Talk, Amber Case explores a special kind of anthropology varied from its traditional form -- she calls herself a “cyborg anthropologist”. Case brings up the fact that we, ourselves, have our own “rituals” surrounding technology in which we are “clicking on things and staring at screens”. Technology has suddenly become a physical extension of ourselves to the point that we feel empty when we don’t have them with us. The ability to connect with just about anything and anybody around the world in an instant, or as Case likes to call it, “wormhole”, is a second self in which we present ourselves but in a digital way. Sure, it may have some downsides in the sense of instant gratification but at the end of the day, technology helps us live our lives because we are “co-creating each other”. It is “increasing our humanness”.

B) Amber Case brings up an excellent point about technology being an extension of ourselves. In the world we live in it seems impossible to participate in society without using some form of machinery. Subsequently, I myself can’t imagine leaving my house without my phone; as Case says, it is not only an extension of our physical selves, but “an extension of our mental self”. What I found interesting in this TED talk was the idea of “cyborg anthropology”. It studies technology as a tool and how it affects our culture. It’s a branch of anthropology that is very prevalent today and will continue to be so long as we keep creating. Case also talks about the idea of technology being a wormhole. I have never thought about it that way before! It may not be a physical wormhole but a digital wormhole where you can communicate with someone from Canada to Austrailia with a click of a button.

No but actually, has anyone else actually gotten a digivice, fake or otherwise, and actually replaced the insides with a smart watch? Or heck, even a flash drive? I’ve come across one or two people trying, when I googled it, but I’ve seen... maybe three successes with the flash drive part, and I believe two of those left the usb end exposed, which is a little less than optimal.

I’ve got a knockoff D-Ark and I’ve already pulled out the insides and have started making plans with a friend of mine to, ah, modify it, so that it has a flash drive or SD card inside that can be accessed with a standard micro usb cable. The smart watch part is still under consideration as to how it should/could be done. And one way or another, my next phone will be NFC enabled so I can stick an NFC sticker on this thing so it does something interesting.

opinion

In my opinion I think the 'bouncing camera' is very practical for the job it was created for. Very simply it was created to prevent unnecessary danger for people that have dangerous jobs such as firemen, police men and army men. I think when this does become widely available it will save hundreds of life's. Throwing this ball into a danger zone before a man or woman does is very necessary in a lot of cases and it is this that will take a lot of the danger out of these situations and that is why I think it is very practical.
