Adaptation
I don’t have my own horse, so I ride on stable horses. This can be quite a challenge to adapt to new horses every time you ride, and most times I didn’t know how to fasten this process so I wouldn't have to spend half my lesson on adapting to the horse and visa versa.
After about a year of riding I found doing a couple of things helped you and your horse to get used to each other quicker. Everyday that I would ride, on a horse that I hadn't ridden on before I would take around 30 minutes of my time, only 30 minutes and this helped us to bond.
I have a few techniques that i will share;
Stroking; The first thing you could try is stroke your horse. Gently stroke them with a positive and clam vibe, the best place to stroke them is at their withers, (The high point of the shoulder where the neck meets the back) because it’s better than having hands all up in your face. If while stroking they tip their nose and turn towards you, it means they're calm and are ok with u stroking them.
Grooming; As well as stroking your horse you could give them a nice log grooming session before riding. This can give you and your horse a nice time to relax and bond as well as ride a clean horse. You could also massage your horse with either your hands, or special massaging brushes.
Snack Time; Many horses love the graze, and can you blame them, when they're stuck inside all day when there’s fresh juicy grass right outside for them to munch on. Take a halter and lead and cuddle your horse while they have a little snack. Maybe you could enjoy some snacks yourself too while bonding
Treats; Usually you can do this while grazing or doing any other activity before riding but its always nice to give your horse a yummy treat. An apple or carrot would be a delicious surprise for them. If you would like to give them other ready treats, maybe you should check their contents and if unsure ask your vet, If all is safe munch on!
Massaging; Many horses could be tired or something else which could've led to some aching in their backs or other parts of their body. A quick fun way to bond is by massaging your horse, maybe in their stall or after a quick groom, most horses love a good massage and there are plenty of videos on how to find key pressure points.
All in all, if you enjoy riding and love horses cherish every moment you have with them. The more positive vibes you give off the more fun you will have riding, and the more smooth things will go if you trust each other!
