People speak in reverence of strong female characters until they're presented with one. When one comes along, they're quick to label her soft or a princess. They long to keep her confined into the cage that is their original perception of her, they wish for her to remain static forever. If she makes a mistake, or grows colder as a result of her trauma, people loathe her. If she tries to find happiness in a hellscape, she's a selfish bitch. If she's held at gunpoint by a loved one and uses her words instead of her fists — how dare she be so weak? Even if she saves lives, even if she's the only person who is patient enough to help someone everyone else has discarded, she hasn't done enough. She's a failure. If she gets another shot at happiness, it was her plan all along. She wanted a fresh start, not emotional baggage. If she falls in love, her character is ruined. If she crosses lines, she's as good as evil. Her mere existence, her growth, her love, her patience — all are criticized. People can't handle a woman breaking free of the labels that they've used to chain her down.
