remembering @selenaqofficial today on the 24th anniversary of her death on march 31st, 1995. the youngest of 3 children born to mexican american abraham quintanilla and wife marcella who is #mexican and #cherokee, she became a superstar before she finished high school. she broke down barriers in #tejanomusic and in the music business as a whole and was on her way to becoming an international pop icon until her life was cut short tragically at the age of 23. a singer, dancer, songwriter, fashion designer, spokesperson and she even was an actress in a few films - made her one of the most celebrated artists of the 90s. now she is still as popular as ever, still a role model for girls/women everywhere and has been influential not only in latin countries but everywhere. and she still is missed. she accomplished so much but imagine how much more she could have done? 💜 #RIPSelena #SelenaForever https://www.instagram.com/p/Bvsg5WSlka_/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1tbg8spc3cr1e

What she means: Selena Qunitanilla single handedly smashed the patriarchy of tenjano music by becoming the highest selling artist in a male dominated music genre, won a Grammy, started her own clothing line of Latin inspired designs and patterns, this woman was a trend setter in fashion, music, dance, and was the light of so many people’s lives and if she were still alive today she would be no doubt one of the most iconic singers/fashion designers of our era. In fact, she was so iconic during her lifetime, that the state of Texas continues to observe her birthday as “Selena Day”, her biopic staring Jennifer Lopez continues to play every year around that time, and there’s a Selena museum dedicated to her life, displaying her most iconic garments she wore during her many performances. She made her family proud, she made the Latino community proud, Chorpus Christi proud, shit she makes me, a non Latina African American proud, she is an icon. An ICON. ICONIC.

I believe this birthday holds even greater significance today, especially considering that Yolanda's parole was denied just two weeks ago. It would have been truly unfortunate if Yolanda had been granted parole on the 30th anniversary of Selena's death, just weeks prior to Selena's birthday. So yes, today is extra special IMO. Selena should BE here with us today, Rest in heavenly peace.
