Discover the Wonders of Astronomy stargazing for Newbies, Telescopes, and More.
Step into the cosmic realm of a 60-year-old enthusiast with a passion for football, fishing, music, and, of course, Astronomy.
My celestial journey began 15 years ago with a pair of Orion 10 x 50 DPS binoculars, leading me to explore the skies with a SkyWatcher 140p go-to telescope. Celebrating my sixtieth birthday, my family gifted me an 8” Celestron Dobsonian Telescope, unlocking new dimensions of stargazing.
Join me as we share astronomical adventures and expand your cosmic awareness with every thing you need for astronomy stargazing.
Enjoy the cosmic ride!

On tour with the Panther Telescope Mount
The final point on this tour of the great west took us to South Dakota. In the Black Hills Mount Rushmore shows the sculpture of four Presidents, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln carved into the mountain. Very impressive!
This great National Monument was sculpted by Danish-American Gutzon Borglum.
Panther Mount and Mount Rushmore.
Half on hour from Rushmore an even larger sculpture is being carved into a Mountain. Crazy Horse Memorial is when completed going to be 195 m wide and 172 m high showing Crazy Horse riding his horse.
Its truly an enormous sculpture.
Notice the yellow bulldozer on his hand...
The Panther in Close encounters of the third kind
On tour with the Panther Telescope Mount
After crossing the endless prairie of Wyoming we arrived at a very special place - "Devils Tower". This rock raises 386 meters above the surrounding terrain and the special shape and grooves has lead to many native american legends:
"One day, seven little girls were playing at a distance from the village and were chased by some bears. The girls ran toward the village and the bears were just about to catch them when the girls jumped on a low rock, about three feet high. One of the girls prayed to the rock, "Rock take pity on us, rock save us!" The rock heard them and began to grow upwards, pushing the girls higher and higher. When the bears jumped to reach the girls, they scratched the rock, broke their claws, and fell on the ground.
The rock rose higher and higher, the bears still jumped at the girls until they were pushed up into the sky, where they now are, seven little stars in a group (The Pleiades)"
"Devils Tower" is truly impressive. Its amazing to see the precisely shaped 4, 5, or 6 edged rock parts along the sides of the tower.
In 1977 Steven Spielberg directed the movie "Close Encounters of the third kind". In this movie Devils Tower is the place where several UFO's land.
The panther Telescope Mount will also give you close encounters of a different kind.
On the top of the world
On tour with the Panther Telescope Mount
Leaving Yellowstone National Park through the Northeast Entrance brings you higher up in the mountains. We went up the Beartooth highway to 10.947 feet (3336 m) where we had the most incredible views, actually looking down on the other snow covered peaks.
The schedule did not leave any possibility to stay and experience the night sky from this fantastic spot. Try and see the light pollution map for this mountain top. How the seeing is on this specific mountain I don't know but I would have loved to check it out. Surely next time around.
Yellowstone - the Panther search for the Mammoth...
On tour with the Panther telescope mount.
After visiting Lick Observatory in California we used a couple of days to cross the Nevada desert and Idaho on the way to Yellowstone National Park.
Yellowstone is a fantastic place. Beautiful and wild nature, amazing landscapes and wonderful hot springs and geysers.
We stayed in Mammoth Hot Springs in the northern part of the park. This area is famous for the very colorful hot springs.
The Panther mount was constantly searching for it's bigger brother "The Mammoth" :-)
In Yellowstone's Lamar Valley herds of Bison's grass like they have done for centuries. Its fantastic to experience live.
Through the telescope it was possible to view and image the large animals in great detail.
Yellowstone must be a wonderful dark place to observe from. Unfortunately the full moon was dominating the sky the days we were there. But the mount and telescope was quickly set up for a look at the moon and Saturn. Both presented nicely at 100 x power.
Full moon blazing bright in Sagittarius.
