More than 1,000 Kenyans have been recruited into Russia’s war in Ukraine. Many did not sign up to fight. They were promised jobs in driving, security, and a better pay. Instead, they ended up on the frontlines. Recruiters target young men facing economic hardship, moving them through the Middle Eastern transit routes, before being pushed into military contracts they barely understand. Some have been injured. Some are missing. Others never returned. Mogadishu, a city in the midst of a remarkable, yet fragile, ascent. Despite decades of brutal civil war and the persistent threat posed by groups like Al-Shabaab, a new elite and returning diaspora are fueling a construction boom, transforming the skyline with apartment towers, filling the streets with chic cafés and a vibrant nightlife.
