David R. Johnson Natural Area (3) by Nicholas A. Tonelli Via Flickr: American beeches (Fagus grandifolia) and other hardwoods at peak autumn color, Bucks County, within the David R. Johnson Natural Area of William Penn State Forest.
Trout lily’s characteristic mottled leaves in the late afternoon light; young plants will grow only a single leaf and no flowers for the first seven or so years of their lives, then grow a second leaf and start to flower. The pollen of trout lilies is either yellow or shades of orange into red - all of the anthers in the population I found at Tyler’s Mill had red pollen.
