“Less is More: Exploring Mindfulness and Conscious Consumption,” A Temple Children Exhibition.

Opening on Friday, August 10th, 2018 at First Amendment Gallery in San Francisco, California is the group exhibition curated by Temple Children entitled, “Less is More: Exploring Mindfulness and Conscious Consumption.”

“Less Is More” opens dialogue surrounding hyper-consumption as a dominant driver of environmental degradation and climate change. This experiential collection navigates between the macro and micro, highlighting the myriad effects that individualistic decisions have on our our planet’s fragile natural resources and ecosystems.

Temple Children is an experimental arts and sustainability platform uniting a diverse global community of creatives to generate collaboration for positive change. In search of a collective consciousness, this dedicated group challenges us to look inward and recognize the interconnectedness between human beings and our environments.

The exhibition will feature exclusive works and sculptures by Askew One, Meggs and Jessie x Katey plus works from Aaron Glasson, Cory Martin, Cryptik, Ellen Rutt, Emad Rashidi, Jet Martinez, Jonny Alexander, Kai Kaulukukui, Lauren YS, Matthew Eaton, Ouizi, Patrick Ethen, Paul Johnson, Rick Hayward & MIMI, Sam Yong, Thing Thing, Wooden Wave and Yoskay Yamamoto.

MEGGS x TEMPLE CHILDREN, “UNITED > DIVIDED.”

“UNITED > DIVIDED” is an interactive, evolving installation by David ‘MEGGS’ Hooke and Miya Tsukazaki (together ‘Temple Children’) created for Thinkspace Gallery’s “LAX/DTW: Detroit Hustle II” exhibition which opened at Inner State Gallery on June 30, 2017 in Detroit, Michigan.                                          

This 270-degree experience developed as a three-phase progression, beginning with the initial ‘Divided’ phase. At the event’s opening, MEGGS and Miya invited friends, artists, and the general public to participate in the artwork’s evolution by painting colorful peace signs and positive messages over the floor on one half of the ‘X’ (a symbol for division).

The intention was to create a genuine experience of people working together to celebrate shared creativity, positivity, and sense of community. “A seemingly small gesture of inviting people into our home studio to paint on the floor side-by-side was a humbling experience overflowing with positive energy,” they said.

The ‘Greater Than’ ( > ) phase emerged as a result of the public’s involvement, and in the week that followed, MEGGS and Miya transitioned the installation into its final phase, ‘Unified.’ The resulting colorful peace sign leans on its side, a dual expression of the planet’s wavering environmental state and hope for a resurgence of solidarity. They installed living plants and flowers sourced from Eastern Market, creating a juxtaposition of Detroit’s discarded layers and Mother Nature’s revival.

The underlying inspiration for the artwork was their reaction to President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement and was motivated to highlight what human beings are capable of through unification, continued proactivity, and perseverance from the community level up. “The fight against catastrophic climate change begins and ends with us, and we must take responsibility for our own carbon footprints in the name of Mother Earth,” says MEGGS.

The installation itself was created in MEGGS’ & Miya’s home studio, and made from approximately 90% repurposed and natural materials that the two began collecting in the fall of 2014.

“Nothing is Separate: A Collaboration with Nature.”

“Nothing Is Separate: A Collaboration with Nature,” is an experimental, traveling installation created by mixed-media artist Ellen Rutt as part of Temple Children’s artist residency in Hilo, Hawai‘i.  By creating intuitive compositions of painted, repurposed wood shapes and costumes at several of the island’s majestic, distinct and isolated terrains, Rutt explores the complex relationship humans have with both natural and constructed environments.  The bright colors and familiar shapes signal our attraction to aesthetics and modes of idealized presentation.

Who is ur favorite oc?

probably my temple children. I love them and I miss them a lot. if I ever write luke cage fanfic it’s good to know they’ll be there.

Do they but their Halloween costumes or make them? What will they be this year? Do they give eachother nicknames? Who's the oldest? Who's the tallest? Do they make short jokes? Who's the cheese lover? Who loves mint icecreAm?

they usually buy them ‘cause no one in the family can sew for shit. not one person. if it’s casual clothing for a costume they can swing it and just dig around in their closet for old clothing. this year soledad wants to be the falcon, after meeting misty’s boyfriend. naomi dresses up as abbie mills. isaiah’s gonna be shaolin fantastic.

they didn’t really give each other nicknames tbh, aside from the usual mean names they call each other for a few hours to piss each other off more after a petty fight.

age order goes: soledad, isaiah, and naomi. soledad and isaiah are four years apart, and naomi was born a couple years after isaiah. (this might change later lmao like this happens after the show I’ll really have to think about birth years and stuff)

baby naomi inherited her dad’s height. isaiah’s second tallest and soledad’s as tiny as her ma. so naomi and isaiah absolutely make short jokes. they lord that over her for sure; the baby siblings, taller than big sister soledad.

they all love cheese because cheese is life and used in their foods a lot. and isaiah LOVES mint ice cream. soledad and naomi think he’s a heathen, but naomi likes pistashio ice cream and soledad goes gaga for that nasty ass birthday cake ice cream so what do they know. they have no room to judge.

Are they all pro candy corn? Who oversalts their fries? Who likes to cook? Who's really into music? And do they sit around and help eachother with homework?

soledad fuckin’ hates candy corn, but isaiah and naomi LOVE it. isaiah’s not big on skittles, though, and naomi hates milky ways, so during halloween they chill in the living room with their loot and trade.

isaiah likes his fries extra salty and crispy and he loves to dip them in his shakes. he can cook pretty well, and so can naomi, so when they’re older and they meet up with family, they cook for the holidays. big ol’ feast of soul and cuban food.

all three kids are music FIENDS. they listen to all kinds, but they fall back on old school r&b and motown music for comfort. and all three kids have their own strengths in school. isaiah’s really good with math, soledad kills it in english, and naomi is very good with history and government. so whenever they’re stuck on something, they always go to each other for help.

eventually, they realize around middle/high school that it’d just be easier to do homework together instead of holing up in their rooms lmao.

Do you'd think they'd all be into sports or would one end up artistic? Or like to dance. Have they met Rhodey?

I think luke and claire would be the kind of parents that would make sure their kids get to try a bit of everything, and when they find something they like, they’ll support them wholeheartedly. misty definitely makes sure they know how to curbstomp their fellow peers in basketball. none of them really see themselves making a career out of it though, but it’s good fun to have.

isaiah’s the one that turns out artsy, out of all of them; he’s got a voice like an angel. soledad wants to be just like godmomma misty and work in the police force. less detective, though, more forensic science.

isaiah and soledad weren’t able to see rhodey irl, but they’ve seen him plenty on the news. naomi was super lucky and got to meet him in person when he came to speak in her class in middle school during career day. he might be the reason why little naomi joins up with the ROTC later on, on course to try her luck and sign up with the marines.

her parents are obviously surprised when she announces this.

I don't see their kids as being trouble makers. They'd have smart mouths but overall they're very respectful but one of them occasionally decides to play how tough am I black edition and the other two wonder how they're related. In my family there's always that one smart ass kid who doesn't know when to quite.

naaaah, they wouldn’t cause trouble. with luke, claire, and misty in their lives? no way would they do anything crazy. they’d be mischievous trouble makers at best. along the vein of the weasely twins. lots of harmless jokes and fun.
