All good points! I defer immediately to your greater knowledge of the non-queer-history stuff, lmao. Here’s the thing, that you have already guessed: I’m a queer theorist and classicist. Early modern English society beyond what is immediately relevant to my thesis is, apologies for the pun, all Greek to me. I know about as much military & maritime history as the Black Sails team does: that is, enough to fool the layman ;D
I suppose what I am trying to say, as the sum of all these posts, is that there is really enough historical precedent for whatever view a fic author would like to take. You want to let them carry on unnoticed by the circles they travelled in? Go for it. This is the view that I think holds slightly more historical merit given Restoration society. But if you want to play up the class difference (something I am not personally interested in doing), you can find historical support for that, too.
