「 TEMPTATION BY DEMONS 」 by SCML | Museum of São Roque on ARTENTIK.com @artentik_ [ artentik.com/item/2055 ] Painting #10 – Collection of 20 dedicated to St. Francis Xavier life. This excellent tenebrist composition with contrasting impressions of light and dark features the legendary episode described by the priest, João de Lucena, in chapter 7 of his biography while the Saint was four months in S. Tomé de Meliapor. It depicts his temptation by three demons close to an altar of Our Lady to whom he is praying for help. This theme is classical and recurrent in the hagiography of the saints, and frequently appears in religious paintings. The three demons here symbolize the classical three temptations of Christ in the desert. Significant dates: 3rd of december (death); 7th of april (borne); 25 of october (beatification; 12 of march (canonization). This is a high-quality painting by André Reinoso, who was the best Portuguese painter of his time, a masterpiece in an Iberian context. It represents passages from the saint's life with great iconographic rigor, leading to his canonization. #HistoricPainting #Religious #TEMPTATIONbyDEMONS #SCML #MuseumofSãoRoque #ARTENTIK https://www.instagram.com/p/CXtStS3POzK/?utm_medium=tumblr
