The apartment building was old but had a pretty vintage quality to it, the rooms comfy and functional with lots of windows and natural light. After only a week here, life felt beautiful and sometimes odd. Not simply because of the thin walls, the creaky woodboards, or the way the elevator creaked.
No, it was your neighbor. Tony.
You hadn't seen him yet, but you had heard the rumors. The landlord mentioned him casually, something about a quiet presence "keeping to himself" and "being unusual." You hadn't given it much thought before the laundry incidents began. You used the shared laundry room in the basement and were seriously worried because you kept losing stuff.
At first, it was only minor things.
A sock here, a scarf there. You'd blamed it on the old dryer chewing your clothing. But then your favorite sweater disappeared. The one your grandmother knitted for you, oversized and fluffy, like a big warm hug.
You'd looked for it everywhere: under the bed, in the closet, behind the couch. You'd even talked to the rest of the apartment owners, hoping that your sweater might have been accidentally misplaced, but nothing. That was when you decided to face your neighbor. Tony was the only person you hadn't approached.
