Part 7 of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has had the most sexual themes of the parts I have read, and almost all of that is stuff related to one character’s super unfortunate storyline that makes me feel kinda gross inside. Along with all the other stuff, I can see why my friends describe JoJo as very much a guilty pleasure.
I think the segment in Part 7of of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure I’m looking forward the most to in my reading is Mountain Tim getting friendzoned.
Through my read-through, it’s sorta been a stepping stone path along memes and characters that I’ve seen before: “It’s finally a Friday”, “How many breads have you eaten in your life?“, “WRYYY”, the turtle guy, Dio’s stupid shoes sticking out from under a pew, etc. This prior knowledge has actually made me more interested rather than discouraged.
I think the most troubling part about Part 2 of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure was the amount of casual racism or racist themes in the story: Nazis being randomly thrown in as basically good guys for no good reason, a grumpy grandpa grumbling about the Japanese, and a black character who was a racist stereotype through and through.
I’m also really disappoint Lisa Lisa actually didn’t fight, because that would have been a lot cooler.
At least the art style improved and this part wasn’t super long.
Timeline resets are one of the hardest things to pull off well in fiction, since it’s easy for them to come off as a cheap way to make up new stories or fix stuff.
I can only evaluate for myself how well the one at the end of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 6 was done after I go back and read the first two parts (my friend recommended this non-linear order since the first two are a little more tedious) and then go on with the seventh.
On a different note, seeing how a different author deals with a timeline change gave me a reference point for Vriska’s resurrection in Homestuck; I think Hussie really had some pacing problems, partly because it seems very likely he hadn’t planned it quite in that way after the introduction of the alpha kids. If he wanted to make the new post-retjohn timeline have more substance, he should have made the meteor journey and alpha kid stuff shorter so that more could have been done with the following section.
In short, it’s hard to get serials to have good pacing and continuous progression of plot.
This week, I have read more comics than I have in the rest of my life.
The track “Breeding Duties” (about mixing the DNA for the Genesis Frog in Sburb) from the album Genesis Frog started playing when a character in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure was introduced who has a special power called Baby Face that can make special assassins from people’s blood/DNA within a host. That’s actually a really weird, creepy coincidence.
Starting to read JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is one of the better late night decisions I have made. It’s really only been a matter of time as my roommates have been slowly pulling me into the strange vortex that it is.
