of Montreal with Locate S,1 @ Teragram Ballroom (5/04/18) // Show Review

Imagine yourself at a concert: hands in pockets (or awkwardly dangling by your sides if you’ve made the unfortunate choice of a pocket-less outfit), head bobbing to the beat, shuffling anxiously to maintain footing as people shove by you to get an inch closer to the front. Imagine the stuffy air, sharp elbows, and sticky floors. Now hold onto that image, and imagine the complete opposite—that’s what it was like to be part of the crowd at the Of Montreal show on May 4th at the Teragram.

Before the band ever graced the stage, I knew the show was going to be something special. The normal pre-show anxiety and mindless chit chat was entirely absent, replaced instead with smiling faces, genuine compliments, and complete and total inclusivity. Fans basked in the warmth of self-expression—donning everything from neon safety vests to vibrant makeup loaded with glitter, every gender, race, sexuality joined together under the power of music.

Locate S,1 -- the opener for of Montreal

There couldn’t have been a more perfect opener for of Montreal than Locate S,1. Her psychedelic riffs and dreamy voice slowly but surely amped up the audience for what was going to be the ride of their lives. From the moment they stepped foot on stage—of Montreal gave the fans everything they came for and so much more. Frontman Kevin Barnes’ revealing outfits and glamorous hair and makeup showed fans just how beautiful it was to feel comfortable in your own skin. He didn’t hold anything back, using the stage as a place to express himself fully and freely, an attitude which translated to the audience as they let loose and danced without inhibition.
