What is your terminal hair length?
My personal terminal length? I have no idea; I haven’t reached it yet. My hair growth is “slowing” at the moment (it’s growing at the same rate of course, but the longer hairs are shedding more as I’m approaching terminal). I would guess that my terminal length is around calf length, which is about how long it was when I graduated uni (before I chopped off a good 16 inches).
Reading more about terminal length has removed my initial skepticism over it and given me more understanding. First I was worried that I would never have long hair because it wasn't "in my genes"; then I was certain I could have floor-length Rapunzel hair if I had enough time to grow it. Many people won't even know their terminal length if they're not taking care of their hair, so my goal is to continue what I'm doing and see how long I can go (though I understand it won't likely make it to the floor)! I'm two years post-relaxer and my natural hair is just slightly shorter than my relaxed hair was.
Terminal length: Do YOU think it's just a myth?
The natural hair community seems to be in a divide over whether or not terminal length is just a myth. Cipriana of Urban Bush Babes seems to think it doesn't exist, while others claim that it's the number one factor in hair growth.
First, let's discuss terminal length: it's the genetically predetermined maximum length that one's hair can grow.
For years I used this as the basis as to why my hair wouldn't surpass my shoulders, ie. it's just not in my genes to have long hair. Then I saw all these success stories of girls achieving length and I began to question if my hair could have that same progress with better care. If my hair is growing then for what reason should it not be long? There is no gene telling my strands to break off once they've gotten to twelve inches --that's a result of poor hair care!--nor is there a gene that recognizes once my hair is a certain length and informs my roots to stop growing. That even sounds like nonsense as I type this.
I really believe that in a couple years after careful maintenance and some tender-loving care my hair will retain its length and debunk the terminal hair myth.
What do you guys think? Is your hair stuck at a length despite proper hair care? Are there people in your family to prove or disprove terminal length?
Let me know! And feel free to submit!
