It is thought to have originated from a Roman festival called Lupercalia starting in the middle of February which is the start of their springtime. • St. Valentine was a priest and physician from Rome in the third century AD. His full name was Valentine of Terni and was born in 226 AD in Terni, Italy. • Emperor Claudius II Gothicus had banned marriages because he thought married men were bad soldiers. Valentine felt this was unfair, so he broke the law and secretly arranged the marriages. When Claudius found out, Valentine was thrown in jail and sentenced to death.
