one of my most favourite things about mcdonald is how he very obviously has a scottish accent but also he’s very obviously trying not to. all of his words are incredibly crisp and clean, his pronunciation is scottish but it’s all subtle— i’ve noticed this especially while learning to write him, when i write his dialogue i expect to clip some of his words because he has a scottish accent but he doesn’t clip his words. at all. and there’s often a slight pause between words as if he’s focusing hard on the accent he wants to project.
of course this can also be due to charles edwards faking an accent for the part but i think it’s so so interesting and also fits perfectly into the show’s themes of class and nationality. because the less scottish mcdonald sounds, the more likely he will be taken seriously, especially as a doctor.
