“What’re you doing here?” Terry asked you as he was walking up to his front door and you exited (he’d never made you give your key back to him and you’d never made him take it back). He wasn’t expecting you to just be at his house (not that he was complaining).
“Giving your father his medication.” You explained. “I’ll be on my way presently.”
He stepped in to intervene in your path. “You don’t have to leave.”
You sighed. “Yes, I do, Terry. You know I do.”
“At least take your ring back now.” He pulled it out of his pocket (he carried it around with him) and tried to slip it into your hand.
You pulled your hand away, though. “No, Terry.” You shook your head. “I can’t.”
“Yes, you can.” He insisted. “Just… take it.”
“No, Terry. Stop it. Please.” You pushed past him.
“I miss you.” He told you as you passed.
“Save it.” You snapped.
He turned to face you, arm extended. “Sweetheart-”
“Stop it, Terry. Just stop it.” You whipped around and put a hand up. “I don’t want to hear any excuses you might have.”
“I’m a weak man. I’m a sinner. I’ll admit that. I won’t make excuses for being unfaithful. But I committed no crime against Lee Anne, darling. Gimme another chance, please.”
“You violated my trust and slept with another woman. How can I ever trust you again?”
“I promise I’m done with her.”
“She go back to her husband?”
He huffed softly. “You been talkin’ to her or somethin’?”
“Ms. Sawyer’s been asking me questions, yes. My e-ex-fiancé has been named in a lawsuit.”
He took a step toward you. “But have you been talking to Lee Anne?”
“I could be called to take the stand for the defense. O-or the prosecution.” You hadn’t because that would be inappropriate.
He took another step toward you. “Have you been talkin’ to her?”
“Why, don’t want me to be talking?”
“Not exactly, no. It’d be… awkward.”
“What do you think she’d say to me?”
“N-Nothin’…” he avoided your gaze.
“Terry…” you used that disappointed tone you often had to use with him.
“She… might tell you that I told her that I loved her.”
You crossed your arms. “Might?”
“Y-yes…”
“Did you tell her you loved her?”
He still could not look at you. “Yes, I did.”
“Did you or do you love her?”
“I-I-I…” Terry never stammered.
You huffed. “Terry…” the disappointment grew within you.
“I know. I know. It’s bad.”
“What do you mean you love her?”
“She doesn’t want me s-”
“So you can come crawling back to me now? No. Nuh uh. I deserve to be chosen first. I had you first!”
He took a step closer to you, gaze meeting yours now. “I will choose you. Every day from this day forth, I will choose you.”
“You have to choose me because you actually want me, not only because you can’t have Lee Anne anymore.”
“I do want you.” He insisted.
“You have to mean that, Terry. You have to prove that. You won’t get another chance. I get a whiff of anything ever again, I’m gone and I’m gone for good, I swear to God.”
“I won’t ever get involved with Lee Anne or any other woman ever again. I promise.”
“If you do, your balls are going on your grill.”
He swallowed thickly and nodded curtly. “Yes, ma’am.”
You held your hand out for the ring. “You still have to make all this up to me.”
He happily deposited the ring into your hand. “I’ll do more than enough to make it up to you.”
You slipped it back on. “You’d better.”
“I promise you I will. I-I got tested… after I…” he cleared his throat, “after the last time with Lee Anne…”
He pulled the paper from his pocket. “I meant to give it to you before now.”
You took the paper from him and looked at the results. They were dated from before the birthday bash.
You looked up at him. “These are dated from before your birthday.”
He nodded. “I know.”
“What about-”
“That’s from right after the last time I had sex with her. I didn’t have sex with her that night.”
You shook your head, confused. “But… the tape…”
“Admittedly isn’t the whole time… but I never took my pants off. I never got my dick out. That’s what’s gonna come out at trial under oath when Roy questions everyone who was there that night. Frank actually fucked her. I didn’t. And we didn’t play roulette with Molly spiked drinks that night. There was no plan to drug her. It wasn’t even my idea to… to move on from the bar…”
“There’s nothing to say you didn’t fuck her evidentially or forensically right now. You didn’t take another test after that night.”
“Because I didn’t have to! I was clean and the only sexual partner I’ve had for seven months now since it’s been confirmed I was clean is you.” He knew men could absolutely cheat and not stay clean, not get tested, but he wasn’t one of them. He would never put your health at risk. He didn’t touch you until he knew he was clean and then he stayed safe and clean by only having penetrative sex with you.
“The others will say you never took your pants off?”
“Ask Cruz, he’ll tell you. Or ask Frank.”
“Whose idea was it to move on from the bar?”
“Frank’s.”
“And you agreed?”
He swallowed but then nodded, meeting your eye. “… yes, I did. And yes, I touched her, I undressed her. And yes, I kissed her. All on camera. But she wasn’t drugged.”
“It wasn’t your idea to… share her?”
He shook his head. “Frank insisted.”
“You still went along with it.”
He nodded. “I did, yes.”
“You’re being honest with me right now?”
“Completely honest. I promise. It was a mistake. Lee Anne was a mistake.”
“You said you loved her.” You reminded him.
“I’m a fool of a man… begging his fiancée to take him back. I’m not asking for forgiveness for what I’ve done.”
“You still violated my trust.”
“Keep me on the shortest leash, then. I won’t complain. I promise.”
You furrowed your eyebrows. “You mean that?”
“Keep me in your sight at all times.”
“You don’t mean that.” You maintained.
“I do mean that.” He affirmed. “I’ll tell you everywhere I go in the daytime. I won’t go out at night without you. I’ll answer your calls and your texts diligently. If I don’t call or text back fast enough for you, you can be annoying about it.”
“I will be.” You agreed.
“Good.” He confirmed. “I want you to be.”
“Really annoying.”
“I welcome it.”
“You’ll hate me.”
“I gave you reason to hate me first. I don’t have a leg to stand on here.”
“I’m glad we’re on the same page with that.”
He reached for your hand to grasp it in his own. “Lemme take you out to dinner tonight.”
You patted his hand. “Baby steps, Terrance, baby steps.”
“Right… baby steps…”
You kissed his cheek. “I’ll call you later, Terry. You’d better answer.”
“I will.” He promised, a small smile on his face.
You slipped your hand out of his and headed back to your car. Terry watched you as you went. And he absolutely watched your ass. He watched you get into your vehicle. You gave him a small smile and raised your hand in a goodbye. He watched as you backed out of the drive. He sighed once you were out of sight. Maybe, just maybe, he could salvage this.
If Lee Anne Marcus could stay away from him. If he could stay away from her.
