I’ve watched “The King and I” and… I don’t even know where to start. Let’s list the things which I liked about it: yes, the music – Rogers and Hammerstein, after all, I was able to follow the plot (which doesn’t happen to me all the time with the old musicals), the Thai culture is very beautiful and the movie was showing a lot of it (but I’ll get back to that later), Yul Brynner ‘s performance was sure memorable and sometimes it gave me a few fair laughs. Well, I guess that’s sort of all let’s start with the most innocent part – it caused me loads of Spanish shame for the king, especially when they were preparing to the banquet and during it. Then let’s face the most obvious thing – whitewashing. Let’s even suppose the Brynner is partly Buryat (and hell was I surprised that his actual name is Yuliy Borisovich Briner and he’s from Vladivostok) and therefore the main role can be considered not whitewashed and even his “main” wife is played by a Puerto Rican actress (Rita Moreno) and his heir by a Filipino-born American actor (Patrick Adiarte), which probably shows that they at least tried but still, even the main cast contains some British/American actors playing Thai people. Coming back with the Thai culture – didn’t they mock it in many ways? You probably already know that it’s banned in Thailand (as well, the same as most other adaptations of the original books), because they still have a… dare I say “cult” of the royal family and king Mongkut is shown as sometimes an absolute idiot (wanting to improve and having a kind heart deep inside but still) – “two male elephants” seriously? I can understand the questions about the Bible or snow, but elephants?! Should I even start to talk about women? (To cut it short – on the one hand, they shown a strong woman – Anna demanding respect from the king, on the other hand, she still agrees to play along with his ego and not give him advice directly.) I don’t know what I expected from such an old movie, but maybe it was just a little over the top.
