In Tokyo, there are 40 types of product officially designated as traditional crafts. These designations were made by the Governor of Tokyo in consultation with the Tokyo Metropolitan Small and Medium Enterprise Support Center, and were based on criteria including how much of the production process is conducted by hand. Aside too from these 40 designated categories, within Tokyo there are many other highly skilled craft industries. A principal aim of the “TOKYO Teshigoto” project is to push forward craft industries in Tokyo including, but not limited to, those in the designated categories. The design and promotional products presented here were chosen through a difficult selection process and our hope is to introduce them widely at home and abroad under the “TOKYO Teshigoto” banner. In this way we hope to be leaders, in developing the skill and aesthetic quality in Tokyo crafts, and sharing this with the world.
Thus, we have started Project “TOKYO Teshigoto” with the purpose of strengthening the foundations of the traditional crafts industry, one of the leading local industries in the city. This new initiative is aimed to convey to the world, the appeal of the sophisticated handworks or “teshigoto” of the masters known as “takumi” who are the pride of Tokyo, so that the generations of traditions will ceaselessly be handed down from craftsman to craftsman well into the future.
