Tetsuo II: Body Hammer is one of those horror sequels with a higher budget and more polish than the first that audiences seem to resonate less with than the first and yet I end up in the minority of people who liked it better than the first. Such is the sophomore slump.

Despite sharing much of the same cast and retaining thematic elements, Body Hammer is a completely different story than the original Tetsuo, and in many ways more polished.

Even though I enjoyed it immensely, I do miss the black and white. The color photography, while slick, pulls some of the grit out of the film.

Not that there isn't grit to spare. The colors and setpieces have enough atmosphere to go around, but the film lacks the Pi/Eraserhead grimy black and white that makes The Iron Man that much more compelling.

Well worth the watch, preferably as a double feature.
