“Grotesco, carnudo, manchado, cabeludo, macabro, musculoso e inegavelmente feminino, meu trabalho de feltro tem duas finalidades; para representar uma forma rude da feminilidade que em sua vulgaridade é supremamente identificável e para uso como um talismã de proteção no sentido de que o trabalho de feltro retém suas propriedades utilitárias, encobrindo o usuário com o calor de suas fibras e criando uma fronteira entre o eu e o outro . Estou interessada em reenquadrar os ideais de identidade feminina e como isso pode ser traduzido por meio do feltro que em si tem sido objeto de rebaixamento.”

“Grotesque, fleshy, mottled, hairy, macabre, muscular, and undeniably feminine, my feltworks’ purpose is two fold; to depict an uncouth form of femininity that in its vulgarity is supremely relatable and for use as a talisman of protection in that the feltwork retains its utilitarian properties, cloaking the wearer in the warmth of its fibers and providing a boundary between the self and the other. I am interested in reframing ideals of feminine identity and how that can be translated through the felt medium which itself has been subject to relegation.”

“Paula Ceroni explora os fios como forma de representar identidades. Ao puxar os fios, ela faz com o tecido o que um escultor faz com a pedra. O primeiro passo é selecionar a matéria-prima: um tecido bicolor, com fibras de cores diferentes em cada direção. Em seguida, ela puxa fios contíguos de uma direção específica, revelando a silhueta do que quer ser representado, como se sempre estivesse lá e acabasse de ser descoberto.“

“Paula Ceroni explores the threads as a way to represent identities. By pulling threads off, she does to a fabric what a sculptor does to a stone. The first step is to select the raw material: a two-tone fabric, with fibers of different color in each direction. Then she pulls off contiguous threads of a specific direction, revealing the silhouette of what wants to be represented, as if has always being there and has just being discovered.”

“As aparências e propriedades dos materiais têxteis são o ponto de partida do meu trabalho. Como artista têxtil, faço principalmente trabalhos tridimensionais. Eu desenho da história têxtil e dou a ela minha própria forma. Eu crio objetos independentes através da minha própria maneira de trabalhar. O ritmo de alinhavo, costura e / ou aperto determina a forma. Dar nova vida a materiais (descartados) e inventar construções são os pilares do meu trabalho.”

“The appearances and properties of textile materials are the starting points of my work. As a textile artist I mainly make three-dimensional work. I draw from the textile history and give it my own shape. I create independent objects through my own way of working. The rhythm of basting, sewing and / or tightening determines the shape. Giving new life to (discarded) materials and inventing constructions are the pillars of my work.”

É difícil aceitar ou identificar um lugar intermediário, uma terra de ninguém. Esquecimento, perda ou degeneração, que impulsionam meu trabalho, nada mais são do que apelos para novos começos. Daí a necessidade de entender minhas composições como a expressão de uma forma de otimismo, um otimismo que permaneceria latente, talvez paradoxal, um otimismo que acolheria a vida e suas possibilidades em vez de seus arrependimentos.”

“My work is situated at the crossroads of individual considerations and historical and political concerns with the overall aesthetic resulting in an abundant form of playfulness. My personal cartography paradoxically, leading nowhere else than in the meanderings of the human psyche, that reflects territories and spaces as temporal allusions. […] My deep inner being is constantly searching and craving for a territory to live, the place that I refuse to call diaspora. It is hard to accept or to identify a place in-between, a no-man’s land. Forgetfulness, loss, or degeneration, which drives my work, are nothing less than calls for new beginnings. Hence the need to grasp my compositions as the expression of a form of optimism, an optimism that would remain latent, perhaps paradoxical, an optimism that would welcome life and its possibilities rather than its regrets.”

“Deslocamento”, ou “Alienação”, muitas vezes se resume no meu trabalho, diz Preta. Tenho um processo de trabalho intuitivo; as imagens simplesmente surgem na minha cabeça. Depois de reconhecer seu significado e valor, começo a materializá-las. As técnicas que aplico podem variar de fotografia a desenho a lápis e bordado. A maioria das obras são únicas, algumas são feitas em pequena edição. Em meu mundo, tradição e experimento andam de mãos dadas, assim como aspereza e refinamento, sinceridade e estranheza, destino e desenvolvimento pessoal. Nas obras, isso pode ser visto refletido por combinações ousadas de técnicas tradicionais e novas, imagens antigas e novas, ou por objetos simples em um cenário suntuoso. Sem problemas, tons de cores tradicionais e sutis em fios finos podem ser misturados com fibras artificiais fluorescentes de alta tecnologia.”

“Displacement”, or “Alienation”, is what it often boils down to in my work, says Preta. I have an intuitive work process; the images usually simply pop up in my head. Once I’ve recognized their meaning and value, I start to materialize them. The techniques I apply, may range from photography to pencil drawing and embroidery. The majority of works are unica, some are made in a small edition. In my world, tradition and experiment go hand in hand, as do roughness and refinement, sincerity and weirdness, fate and personal development. In the works, this can be seen reflected by bold combinations of traditional and new techniques, ancient and brand-new images, or by plain objects in a sumptuous setting. Without a hitch, traditional, subtle colour hues in fine yarn, may be mixed with fluorescent, hi-tech artificial fibres.”
