Just a reminder to everyone that discord is rolling out age verification. If you don't want to be monitored or deal with discord any more, I have done some research and the best alternatives I have found is Matrix and Stoat.
Matrix is great if you either want to host your own stuff, or want a decentralized network where it's almost impossible for it to go down forever. It essentially works like Email where there are multiple different clients (I recommend element, it's good) and many people host their own servers. If the person who manages their own server allows it then you can still talk to everyone else on Matrix (whose server allows it). You can just register an account through their official servers if you just want to give your data to a more trustworthy company but I would recommend against it as long as it's possible to run a different server. I may set up my own if you guys trust me any more than this company, but if possible I'd advise you to set up your own or use a friends if they have it, but it's still better than discord to use the official server. I compare it to email to better illustrate how it works, but it's still a fully complete discord alternative.
Stoat/Revolt is closer to the actual discord experience. It's free and open source and you can host your own servers on it too. The main difference is that there is no talking between different servers, so if you don't have any friends with a server and can't/don't want to set up a server yourself, then you're basically forced to use the official servers instead of your own, which, again, puts your data to the mercy of a company. But it's definitely more like discord if everyone had nitro. If your friends are stubborn or you want a more traditional chat experience, Stoat is probably what you want.
Teamspeak, don't use it. It's significantly less secure and unless you only stick to people you know and your own servers, your chances of getting DOSed are pretty high if you so much as share your screen and someone doesn't like you. Just, please, don't use it as a discord alternative. It barely even supports text chat.
I know there's probably a million writeups about this topic out there right now, but I wanna contribute even the slightest bit to people getting off this completely awful app.
